Abraham: The Chosen Ancestor of the Jewish People

Abraham's Background as a Gentile

Abraham began his journey as a member of one of the many nations or ethnic groups that existed during his time. At this point, Abraham was set apart for God's purposes.

The Promise to Abraham

God made a promise to Abraham, saying, "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you" (Genesis 12:2-3).

It is believed that the word "Jew" was coined during the exile, possibly by the Babylonians or Persians, to refer to those who came from the kingdom of Judah.

Therefore, technically, no one was called a "Jew" before the exile. However, by New Testament times, "Jew" had become a common term to refer to the people of Israel. So, while Abraham was never referred to as a Jew, he is considered the ancestor of the Jewish people.

Abraham's Significance as a Forefather

Abraham holds great significance in both Jewish and Christian traditions. His faith and obedience to God set an example for future generations.
