The prophet Agabus is mentioned in two short passages in the Bible, providing us with limited information about him. In Acts 11:27–30, Agabus is described as one of several prophets who came from Jerusalem to Syrian Antioch, where Paul was ministering. As a prophet, Agabus received direct messages from God and communicated them to the people. During this time, Agabus predicted, by the Holy Spirit, that a great famine would spread over the entire Roman world. His prophecy was accurate, as the famine occurred during the reign of Emperor Claudius.

As a result of Agabus's prophecy, the believers in Antioch began gathering money to send to the Christians living in Judea. This monetary gift was an appropriate response because although there was still food available for purchase during famines in the ancient Roman Empire, prices were dramatically elevated. With adequate funds, the Christians in Judea would be able to purchase food. Additionally, the Christians in Judea may have been cut off from their families and normal means of support, making this love gift from Antioch all the more important as a sign of unity between Jewish and Gentile believers.

In Acts 21:10–12, we see Agabus once again, this time in Caesarea. Although it is not explicitly stated that this is the same Agabus as in Acts 11, there is no reason to assume he is a different person. In this instance, Agabus meets Paul as he is on his way to Jerusalem and functions as a prophet once again. Agabus takes Paul's belt and ties up his own hands and feet with it, proclaiming that the Holy Spirit says the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of the belt and hand him over to the Gentiles.

Upon hearing Agabus's prophecy, those accompanying Paul try to dissuade him from going to Jerusalem, but he remains resolute. In this case, it seems that the purpose of the prophecy was to mentally prepare Paul for what he would face rather than to warn him not to go.

Throughout these instances, Agabus faithfully delivered the messages that God had given him, saying no more and no less than what God had told him. This faithfulness is the one requirement of a faithful prophet.
