Agnosticism: Exploring the Unknown
Agnosticism is a philosophical standpoint that asserts the impossibility of knowing or proving the existence of God. The term "agnostic" itself means "without knowledge." It is an intellectually honest position that differs from atheism, which claims that God does not exist, a proposition that cannot be proven. Agnosticism argues that the existence of God is beyond human knowledge and cannot be proven or disproven. In this sense, agnosticism holds a valid perspective, as the existence of God cannot be empirically demonstrated.
The Bible teaches us that accepting God's existence requires faith. Hebrews 11:6 states that without faith, it is impossible to please God, emphasizing the importance of believing in His existence and seeking Him earnestly. God is described as a spirit in John 4:24 and therefore cannot be seen or physically perceived. Unless God chooses to reveal Himself, He remains invisible to our senses (Romans 1:20). Nevertheless, the Bible affirms that evidence of God's existence can be observed in the universe (Psalm 19:1-4), sensed in nature (Romans 1:18-22), and confirmed within our own hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
Agnostics adopt a position of indecision regarding the existence of God. It represents a "straddling the fence" stance, neither affirming nor denying God's existence due to the impossibility of knowing for certain. Theists believe in God's existence, while atheists deny it. Agnostics argue that neither belief nor disbelief should be embraced since it is impossible to determine the truth definitively.
For the sake of argument, let us set aside the undeniable evidence for God's existence. If we consider both theism and agnosticism as equally plausible, which viewpoint makes more sense regarding the possibility of life after death? If there is no God, both theists and agnostics simply cease to exist upon death. However, if God does exist, both theists and agnostics will be held accountable after death. From this perspective, it appears more rational to lean towards theism rather than agnosticism. If neither position can be proven or disproven, it seems wise to thoroughly examine the position that may hold an infinitely and eternally more desirable outcome.
It is natural to experience doubts and uncertainties. Many things in this world are beyond our comprehension. Often, people doubt God's existence because they do not understand or agree with His actions and allowances. However, as finite human beings, we cannot expect to fully comprehend an infinite God. Romans 11:33-34 expresses awe at the depth of God's wisdom and knowledge, acknowledging that His judgments are unsearchable and His ways unfathomable. "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" We are called to believe in God by faith and trust in His ways. God is ready and willing to reveal Himself in amazing ways to those who believe in Him wholeheartedly (Deuteronomy 4:29).
