Angel Gadreel
The concept of an angel named Gadreel is not found in the Bible. However, it originates from the mythical and apocryphal Book of Enoch. This book delves into angelology and demonology, providing additional details about the events mentioned in Genesis 6:1–4. The Book of Enoch explains the origin of the Nephilim, who were mentioned in Genesis 6:4, and the identity of the "sons of God" in verses 2 and 4. It is important to note that the Book of Enoch is not considered canonical literature.
According to the mythology presented in the Book of Enoch, Gadreel was one of the 200 Grigori or watchers who rebelled against God and were cast out of heaven alongside Satan. Gadreel held the position of the third leader among these fallen angels. These angelic leaders were responsible for a heinous sin, enticing other fallen angels to indulge their lust by having sexual relations with human women. This resulted in the birth of the Nephilim, an evil race of giants who brought terror to the pre-flood world. As a consequence, judgment was pronounced upon Gadreel and the other demonic watchers.
In Jewish mythology, another one of the Grigori involved in these illicit unions with human women was Azazel, a goat-like demon associated with wilderness and desert places.
The Book of Enoch also attributes other actions to Gadreel. It suggests that he showed mankind all the ways to inflict death and led Eve astray. Additionally, it claims that he introduced weapons of death such as shields, mail coats, swords, and other weaponry to humanity. According to this legend, all warfare can be traced back to Gadreel's teachings.
It is essential to recognize that while these stories about Gadreel and other fallen angels are intriguing, they are not supported by the Bible. The Bible provides limited information about holy angels, and even less about fallen angels. Only a few names of fallen angels are revealed to us. Elaborate tales about spirit beings like Gadreel, Azazel, Penemue, and others are simply products of human imagination. If we seek reliable information about angels and demons, the inspired Scriptures are our only trustworthy source.
