Angels Appear
Angels are celestial beings that play a significant role in the Bible. While it may seem from a casual reading of Scripture that angelic appearances were somewhat common, they were actually quite rare. However, there is an increasing interest in angels today, with many reports of angelic appearances. Angels are present in almost every religion and generally serve as messengers. To understand whether angels still appear today, it is important to examine their ancient appearances as depicted in the Bible.
Angelic Appearances in the Bible
Adam and Eve's Expulsion - The first appearance of angels in the Bible is when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. God placed cherubim with a flaming sword to block the entrance (Genesis 3:24).
Hagar's Instruction - Approximately 1,900 years later, an angel appeared to Hagar, instructing her to return and submit to her mistress, Sarai (Genesis 16:7).
Abraham and Lot's Visitors - In Genesis 18:2, God appeared to Abraham along with two angels to inform him about the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. These same angels visited Lot and instructed him to escape the city with his family before its destruction (Genesis 19:1-11).
Jacob's Encounter - Jacob saw a multitude of angels and recognized them as God's army (Genesis 32:1).
Balaam's Confrontation - An angel confronted the disobedient prophet Balaam, who initially did not see the angel, but his donkey did (Numbers 22:22).
Mary and Joseph's Encounters - Mary received a visit from an angel who told her that she would be the mother of the Messiah. Joseph was also warned by an angel to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt to protect them from King Herod's edict (Matthew 2:13).
Fear and Supernatural Power - When angels appear, those who see them are often struck with fear. In some instances, angels display supernatural power, such as when they blinded the wicked men who threatened Lot (Genesis 19:1-11).
Angelic Messages and Worship - Angels deliver messages from God and do His bidding. They refuse to be worshiped and always point people to God, giving Him the glory (Revelation 22:8-9). Scripture warns against worshiping angels and emphasizes that any angel who does not give glory to the Lord Jesus is an imposter (Colossians 2:18; Galatians 1:8; 2 Corinthians 11:14-15).
Modern Reports of Angelic Appearances
In modern times, there have been various reports of angelic visitations. These encounters can take different forms:
Preventing Harm - Some people report that a stranger appeared in a critical moment to prevent serious injury or death, only to mysteriously disappear afterwards. These encounters often leave individuals with a sense of peace and assurance of God's presence.
Brief Apparitions - Others describe seeing a winged or white-clothed being for a moment before it vanishes. These encounters align with the biblical pattern seen in Acts 27:23.
Angel Choir Experiences - Similar to the heavenly choir that visited the shepherds in Luke 2:13, some individuals have reported experiencing an angelic choir in places of worship. While this type of encounter may not serve a specific purpose other than providing a feeling of spiritual elation, it is worth noting that the original angel choir announced the birth of Jesus.
Physical Sensations - Elderly individuals have often reported feeling as though arms or wings were wrapped around them during times of extreme loneliness. These experiences may be interpreted as examples of God's comforting presence, as Scripture speaks of God covering us with His wings (Psalm 91:4).
The Continued Presence of Angels
God is still actively present in the world today, and His angels continue to work. Just as angels protected God's people in the past, we can be assured that they are guarding us today. Hebrews 13:2 reminds us not to forget to entertain strangers, as some have entertained angels unknowingly. By obeying God's commands, we may encounter His angels, even if we do not realize it.
It is essential to remain cautious regarding angelic beings. Scripture warns that there are fallen angels who work for Satan and seek to subvert and destroy us. Galatians 1:8 advises us to be cautious even if an angel delivers a "new" gospel. Colossians 2:18 warns against worshiping angels, highlighting that any angel who receives worship or does not give glory to the Lord Jesus is an imposter. Satan and his angels can disguise themselves as angels of light to deceive and lead astray those who listen to them (2 Corinthians 11:14-15).
While encounters with angels are extraordinary occurrences, they serve as a reminder that Jesus Himself has promised to be with us always until the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). We can find comfort in knowing that God's angels are at work and that we have the assurance of Jesus' presence in our trials.
Why This Matters
Understanding the biblical perspective on angelic appearances helps us discern genuine encounters from deceptive ones. It reminds us that God is actively involved in our lives and provides comfort through His angels and His own presence. Recognizing the fallen nature of some angelic beings safeguards us against false teachings or improper worship. Embracing the biblical teachings about angels can deepen our faith and trust in God's providence.
