Angels: Their Appearance and Characteristics

Angels are spiritual beings, without a physical form (Hebrews 1:14). However, they have the ability to appear in human form when interacting with humans. In various instances recorded in the Bible, angels took on the appearance of normal men. For example, in Genesis 18:1-19, God and two angels appeared as men and shared a meal with Abraham. Similarly, angels appeared as men on other occasions throughout the Bible (Joshua 5:13-14; Mark 16:5). It is important to note that angels never appear in the likeness of women.

At times, angels appeared in a more otherworldly form that was terrifying to those who encountered them. Their appearances were often accompanied by the admonishment "do not be afraid," as extreme fear was a common reaction. For instance, the keepers of Jesus' tomb were overcome with fear upon seeing the angel of the Lord (Matthew 28:4), and the shepherds in the fields were "sore afraid" when the angel of the Lord appeared to them (Luke 2).

In terms of physical characteristics, angels are sometimes described as having wings. The cherubim depicted on the ark of the covenant had wings that covered the mercy seat (Exodus 25:20). Isaiah described winged seraphim in his vision of the throne of heaven, each having six wings (Isaiah 6:2). Moreover, Ezekiel also saw visions of winged "living creatures," which are believed to be angels (Ezekiel 1). Isaiah 6:1-2 portrays angels with human features such as voices, faces, and feet. Angelic voices are heard singing and praising God in several other passages. The angel at Jesus' tomb is described as having a brilliant appearance, with countenance like lightning and raiment white as snow (Matthew 28:3).

It is believed that angels, regardless of their form, possess extraordinary beauty. Ezekiel mentions a “guardian cherub” who was lifted up in pride over his beauty (Ezekiel 28:16–17). Additionally, beings like angels, who are constantly in the presence of God, would be expected to reflect God's glory and therefore radiate exceptional beauty.
