Anti-Natalism: Is It Biblical?
Anti-natalism is a philosophy that discourages human birth as immoral. Some argue that bringing more children into the world is wrong, assigning negative value to human procreation. This perspective conflicts with the biblical perspective on human life, which views children as a blessing from God. In this article, we will explore anti-natalism from a biblical, young-earth, conservative Christian perspective and examine why this philosophy falls short.
The Philosophy of Anti-Natalism
Anti-natalists generally fall into three categories: misanthropic, philanthropic, and ecocentric. Misanthropic anti-natalists see humanity as the problem in the world, causing pain, misery, injustice, and crime. They perceive humans as a disease that needs to stop spreading. Philanthropic anti-natalists believe that procreation is cruel to the children being brought into the world. They argue that life is full of suffering and it is inherently wrong to subject another human being to it. Ecocentric anti-natalism focuses on the survival of the planet and sees humans as destroyers of the earth.
A Biblical Perspective on Human Life
The Bible presents a different view on human life. It reveals that God created human beings in His image and instructed Adam and Eve to fill the world with their descendants (Genesis 1:26–28). Children are described as a reward from God, not a curse (Psalm 127:3). God takes a personal interest in every human being and desires to see His image reflected in them (Psalm 139:13–16). Each individual has a purpose and is created for His own intentions.
God's Positive View of Birth
The Bible provides numerous examples of God's positive view of birth. When God blessed individuals or nations, it often involved increasing their number of children and grandchildren (Genesis 30:22; 1 Samuel 1:19–20; Exodus 23:25–26). God even promised Abraham that he would be the father of a great nation (Genesis 13:16). Throughout Scripture, God is depicted as opening the womb of women who cried out to Him for children. This underscores the value and significance of each human life.
The Sanctity of Human Life
Regardless of the circumstances of a child's conception, each human being is a special creation from God. Human life is sacred. Jesus Himself welcomed little children and emphasized their importance (Matthew 19:14). As Christians, we are called to follow His example and cherish the gift of life.
The Answer to Human Problems
While the world has its share of problems, the answer is not to destroy human life through abortion or to cease procreating altogether. The ultimate answer lies in Jesus Christ, the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. He is the one who will one day right all wrongs and restore all things to God's perfect standard. Instead of embracing anti-natalism, we are called to trust in God's plan and purpose for each individual life.
Why This Matters
Understanding and addressing anti-natalism is important because it challenges the biblical perspective on human life. By comprehending the flaws in this philosophy, we can better defend the sanctity of human life and promote a positive view of birth.
Think About It
- How does anti-natalism contradict the biblical view of human life?
- What are some practical ways we can affirm the value and dignity of every human being?
- How does our understanding of God's purpose for each individual shape our perspective on procreation?
- How can we respond to those who advocate for anti-natalism with love and compassion while upholding biblical truths?
