Aristarchus in the Bible
Aristarchus, a companion of the apostle Paul, played an important role in spreading the message of Christianity. In the book of Acts, we see Aristarchus mentioned during a riot in Ephesus. He and Gaius, described as "Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia," were seized by an angry mob because Paul's preaching had upset the metalworkers who made idols of Artemis (Acts 19:29). Although the mob couldn't find Paul, they took his fellow workers instead. It was only after two hours that the city clerk was able to disperse the crowd and secure their release.
Aristarchus was a Macedonian who lived in Thessalonica, the capital city of Macedonia (Acts 27:2). While we don't know much about his background or how he became a Christian, some commentators suggest that he could have been a Jewish convert to Christianity. Regardless, Aristarchus faithfully served alongside Paul and accompanied him on several journeys.
After the riot in Ephesus, Paul traveled to Greece and decided to return through Macedonia after a three-month stay (Acts 20:1–3). During this journey, many men accompanied Paul, including Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica (Acts 20:4). Later on, Aristarchus also traveled with Paul on his initial voyage to Rome, although it is uncertain if he journeyed all the way to Rome at that time (Acts 27:1–2).
We learn from Paul's letter to the Colossians that Aristarchus was with him during his first Roman imprisonment. In his letter, Paul writes, "Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, greets you, as does Mark, Barnabas's cousin" (Colossians 4:10, HCSB). This shows how much Paul valued Aristarchus' companionship and service in the Lord.
The last mention of Aristarchus in the Bible is in Paul's short letter to Philemon. In the greeting section of the letter, Paul includes Aristarchus among those who send their greetings (Philemon 1:23–24). Although the Bible doesn't provide further details about Aristarchus' life, tradition places him as the bishop of Apamea, Syria. However, this position is not mentioned in Scripture. Additionally, church tradition suggests that Aristarchus was martyred under the reign of Nero.
While there may be limited information about Aristarchus in the Bible, what we do know is that he was a faithful follower of Christ who served alongside Paul. The few biblical references to Aristarchus remind us that we don't need to be "high-profile" individuals to accomplish great things for God. Even if our service for Christ may sometimes go unnoticed by others, it is seen and valued by the Lord (Colossians 3:23–24).

The story of Aristarchus reminds us of the importance of faithful companionship and service in the Christian journey. Just like Aristarchus supported Paul and accompanied him on his missionary journeys, we too can play a significant role in advancing the Kingdom of God by standing alongside fellow believers and serving together. Furthermore, Aristarchus' example encourages us to faithfully serve God even when our contributions may seem small or unnoticed by others. It reminds us that every act of service, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has value in God's eyes. We are called to serve with dedication and excellence, recognizing that our ultimate reward comes from pleasing and honoring the Lord.
