Athaliah was the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel, and she married Jehoram, the eldest son of Judah's King Jehoshaphat. Her reign as queen occurred during a time marked by numerous evil monarchs who ruled over both Judah and Israel. Athaliah's story can be found in 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22–23.

Athaliah's husband, Jehoram, became the king of Judah after his father's death in 841 BC. Unlike his father, Jehoram proved to be a wicked king. Athaliah and Jehoram had a son named Ahaziah, who ascended to the throne at the age of 22. Ahaziah followed in his father's footsteps and displayed the same evil tendencies. Athaliah supported her son in his wicked schemes.

The Assassination of Ahaziah

Ahaziah's reign as king of Judah lasted for less than a year before he was assassinated along with Joram, the ailing king of Israel. Their assassin was Jehu, who had previously served as a commander in King Ahab's army. The prophet Elisha had anointed Jehu as the new king of Israel and tasked him with carrying out God's judgment on King Ahab's idolatrous family. In fulfilling this mission, Jehu put Jezebel and her sons to death. Ahaziah happened to be visiting Joram when Jehu arrived to carry out the assassination, resulting in Ahaziah's death as well.

Athaliah's Usurpation of the Throne

Upon receiving news of her son's death, Athaliah saw an opportunity to seize the throne for herself. She murdered Ahaziah's sons, her own grandsons, in order to eliminate any potential heirs and secure her position as queen. Little did Athaliah know that one grandchild had managed to escape the massacre. Jehosheba, the baby's aunt and the wife of the high priest Jehoiada, took the infant Joash and hid him along with his nurse in a bedroom. Joash was later smuggled out of the castle and taken to the temple, where he remained hidden for six years while Athaliah reigned over the land.

Athaliah's Reign and Baal Worship

As queen, Athaliah used her influence to further establish the worship of Baal in Judah. She installed priests and built altars for this idol within the temple of the Lord itself. In this way, Athaliah followed in the footsteps of her mother, Jezebel. It is worth noting that the name Athaliah can mean either "God is exalted" or "dealt violently with by God." However, Queen Athaliah did not live a life that exalted God; instead, God dealt forcefully with her.

The Rise of King Joash

After Athaliah had reigned for six years, the high priest Jehoiada took action. He set guards around the temple and publicly crowned Joash, who was still just a young child, as the rightful king. As Joash was anointed king, the people clapped their hands and shouted, "Long live the king!" Athaliah heard the commotion and realized what was happening. She ran out of the palace shouting accusations of treason. However, Jehoiada commanded his troops to capture Athaliah, and she was subsequently executed where horses entered the palace grounds.

The Rejoicing and Restoration

With the demise of Athaliah, seven-year-old King Joash took the throne under the guidance of the faithful high priest Jehoiada. Joash wasted no time in restoring the rightful worship of God. He tore down the temple of Baal, smashed the altars and images of Baal, and put the priest of Baal to death. This act brought joy to all the people of the land, and the city experienced a newfound calm because Athaliah had been slain.
