Being a Child of God

Being a child of God is a concept found in the New Testament that holds great significance for Christians. In this article, we will explore what it means to be a child of God, how one becomes a child of God, and the implications and blessings that come with being part of God's family.

Understanding the Children of God

The phrase "child of God" or "children of God" is used several times in the New Testament. First John 3:10 provides insight into what it means to be a child of God: "This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister." Here, John describes the life of someone who has genuinely received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Being a child of God means living in a way that pleases our heavenly Father, characterized by love and righteousness.

It is important to note that not everyone is automatically considered a child of God. Although all human beings are created in God's image and loved by Him, we can only become His children through adoption (Ephesians 1:5; Romans 8:15). Due to our sinful nature, we are under the influence of Satan and enslaved by sin (2 Corinthians 4:4; John 8:34; Romans 6:16). In order to have fellowship with God, our sins must be forgiven, and our nature must be restored through faith in Jesus Christ.

The New Birth

To become children of God, we must experience what Jesus referred to as the "new birth" (John 3:3). This new birth involves a radical transformation where our old sinful nature is replaced with a desire to please the Lord. Although believers still struggle with sin (1 John 1:8), we have Jesus Christ as our advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1). As children of God, our sins are paid for, and our fellowship with God is restored.

Blessings of Being a Child of God

Being a child of God brings numerous blessings and privileges. We have direct access to God through prayer, anytime and anywhere (Hebrews 4:16). We can approach the throne of grace with confidence, knowing that we will receive mercy and find grace to help us in times of need. Our Heavenly Father promises to supply all our needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Furthermore, He delights in giving good gifts to those who ask Him (Matthew 7:11).

As children of God, we have the assurance of eternal life in heaven (Ephesians 1:13–14; John 3:16–18). Through faith in Jesus, the entry fee for heaven has been paid for every person who believes. We eagerly anticipate seeing Jesus face to face and live with Him for eternity. This hope motivates us to purify ourselves and strive for purity, just as He is pure (1 John 3:3). Being children of God also compels us to do good works, as true saving faith results in a transformed life (Titus 2:14; James 2:14, 26).

The Transformation Process

When we become children of God, He begins the process of transforming us through the power of the Holy Spirit. As we submit to God's guidance, we gradually start to resemble our Heavenly Father in our words, desires, and actions (Philippians 2:12–15). However, it is important to note that if we do not exhibit a family resemblance to our Heavenly Father, it may indicate that we are not truly His children (1 John 1:5–6; 2:3–4).

God's Call to be His Children

God's invitation to become His children extends to people from all walks of life, regardless of their background or status (John 6:44). Throughout history, God has been calling individuals to be part of His family. In eternity, the children of God will worship Him as one united family, representing every nation, tribe, and tongue (Revelation 7:9; 14:6). As children of God, we live for Him on earth and eagerly anticipate an eternity spent with Him in heaven (Philippians 1:21; Galatians 2:20).

Why This Matters

Understanding what it means to be a child of God is crucial for every Christian. It reminds us of our identity and purpose in Christ. Recognizing that we are adopted into God's family through faith in Jesus should bring us joy, assurance, and a desire to live in a way that pleases our Heavenly Father. It also highlights the importance of sharing the good news of salvation with others so they too can become children of God.

Think About It

Take a moment to reflect on your own life and relationship with God. Do you exhibit the characteristics of a child of God? Are you actively seeking to please your Heavenly Father? Consider how you can grow in your understanding and experience of being a child of God and how it impacts your daily life.
