Beer Lahai Roi
Beer Lahai Roi is a significant location mentioned in the book of Genesis. It first appears in Genesis 16 when God had promised Abram (later known as Abraham) children, but many years had passed without any children being born. In an attempt to fulfill this promise, Abram's wife Sarai suggests that he take her slave girl Hagar and have a child with her. According to the customs of that time, the child would belong to Sarai. This plan is successful, and Hagar becomes pregnant.
However, as expected, strife and jealousy arise between Sarai and Hagar. Hagar begins to feel proud, while Sarai blames Abram for the situation. In response, Abram gives Sarai permission to deal with Hagar as she sees fit. Sarai mistreats Hagar, causing her to run away and flee into the desert. It is during this time that the angel of the LORD finds Hagar near a spring in the desert. The angel speaks to Hagar and tells her to return to Sarai and submit to her. The angel also promises that Hagar's descendants will be too numerous to count.
Hagar is deeply moved by this encounter, and she gives a name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me." She names the well at that location Beer Lahai Roi, which means "the well of him that lives and sees me" or "the well of the vision of life." This name reflects Hagar's recognition that God saw her situation and intervened to give her hope and comfort.
The name Beer Lahai Roi is mentioned two more times in Genesis. Genesis 24:62 states that Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi and was living in the Negev. Genesis 25:11 mentions that after Abraham's death, God blessed Isaac who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi. These references indicate that Beer Lahai Roi was a known location and continued to be significant to Isaac and his descendants.
