Being a Man

The concept of what it means to be a man can vary greatly depending on cultural, societal, and personal beliefs. A true man, following in the footsteps of Jesus, is obedient to the Father's will and dedicated to His work (Hebrews 10:9). He rejects sin and embraces righteousness, striving to keep God's commandments and live according to His will. A godly man displays determination in fulfilling God's purpose regardless of the challenges he may face (Isaiah 50:7). He endures opposition and remains steadfast in his faith (Hebrews 12:3). Through reliance on Scripture, prayer, love, and sacrificial acts (Matthew 4:1-10; Mark 1:35; John 13:1), he exemplifies true manhood.

Qualities of a Godly Man

The Bible provides further guidance on the qualities that define a godly man. In the qualifications for elders and deacons, we find a description of characteristics that should be present in a man who desires to serve in leadership roles within the church community (1 Timothy 3:2-4, 7; 1 Timothy 3:8-9).

A godly man is someone who is above reproach, faithful to his spouse, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, and capable of teaching. He does not indulge in drunkenness, violence, quarrelsomeness, or a love for money. He manages his own family well and maintains a good reputation with those outside the faith (1 Timothy 3:2-4, 7). Similarly, deacons should be respected individuals who are sincere, not given to excessive drinking or dishonest gain. They should hold fast to the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience (1 Timothy 3:8-9).
