Being Reborn: A Spiritual Transformation

Just as the caterpillar sheds its old form and emerges as a new creature, believers are born again as new creations in Christ.
What is Spiritual Rebirth?
The Bible teaches that spiritual rebirth occurs when a person places their faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection, receiving God’s forgiveness of sin. This act of salvation is essential for entering the kingdom of God, as Jesus states, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” (John 3:3). This rebirth is not a physical transformation but a spiritual one that has profound consequences for believers' lives.
How Can We Know We Have Been Reborn?
Many individuals wonder how they can know if they have experienced spiritual rebirth. Is there a specific experience or feeling to seek? The Bible provides guidance on this matter. Galatians 5:22–23 provides a list of qualities that believers will demonstrate as a result of being reborn by the Holy Spirit. These qualities include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit within believers serves as evidence of their rebirth (John 14:16–17; 1 John 4:13). The Holy Spirit also empowers believers to live according to God's will (Romans 8:9).
A reborn person experiences a noticeable change in their life before and after accepting Christ. They no longer desire to live in habitual sin without remorse (Ephesians 5:5–8; 1 Thessalonians 5:5). Instead, they seek to imitate Christ and practice righteousness (1 John 2:29). Although Christians are not perfect, their transformed lives reflect a desire to do good works for the Lord (Ephesians 2:10).
Love as a Mark of Rebirth
Jesus emphasized love as a distinguishing characteristic of His followers (John 13:34–35). A reborn person will demonstrate love for fellow believers, as stated in 1 John 4:20. This love extends even to enemies, as Jesus taught (Matthew 5:44; Mark 12:31). A genuine love for others serves as evidence of being born again.
