Believing in Jesus: Understanding Biblical Faith
Believing in Jesus goes beyond simply acknowledging His existence, much like believing in Santa Claus or aliens. When we ask if someone believes in Jesus, we are asking if they believe that Jesus Christ is who the Bible says He is and if they are trusting Him as their Savior.
Belief in Jesus involves accepting that He is God in human form (John 1:1, 14) and that He died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21). Without this sacrifice, we would face eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23). It is crucial to understand that the sacrifice of Jesus, as God incarnate, is the only sufficient payment for our sins (1 John 2:2; John 14:6; Acts 4:12).
Trusting in Jesus: More Than Believing Facts
Biblical faith is not merely acknowledging certain truths; it also involves trust and reliance on those truths. To illustrate this, let's consider a chair. You may believe that a chair is made of strong materials and assembled correctly. However, merely believing these facts is not enough. Biblical faith is actually sitting in the chair and relying on it to support your weight off the ground.
In the same way, true belief in Jesus means trusting that He is your Savior and relying on His death as the complete payment for your sins. It means depending on His resurrection as the assurance that you will also be raised to eternal life after death. If the metaphorical "chair" of Jesus Christ were to be removed, would you fall to the ground spiritually? Or are you solely relying on Him?
Taking the Next Step: Putting Faith into Action
If you understand and believe what the Bible says about Jesus and are trusting in those truths for salvation, you are saved! You genuinely "believe in Jesus" in the biblical sense. However, if you are uncertain or feel God drawing you to faith in Jesus, the next step is simple: believe and trust in Him.
To express your new faith to God verbally, you can say a prayer like this:
"God, I acknowledge that I have sinned and that my sin separates me from You. I understand that without forgiveness, my sin will lead to eternal separation from You. I believe and trust that Jesus Christ is my Savior. I believe He died to pay the full penalty for my sins and rose from the dead on the third day. I am relying solely on His sacrifice to restore my relationship with You. Thank you for forgiving me and saving me. Help me grow closer to You every day for the rest of my life."

Why This Matters:
Believing in Jesus is not just about acknowledging His existence or accepting certain facts about Him. It involves trust and reliance on Him as our Savior. Understanding this distinction is essential for true biblical faith.
Think About It:
Consider whether you have truly put your trust in Jesus as your Savior. Are you relying solely on Him for forgiveness and salvation? Take a moment to reflect on your faith and make any necessary adjustments to fully trust in Him.
