Bible Anarchy

Anarchy is often associated with chaos and a lack of governmental authority in society. However, some individuals embrace anarchism, which is the belief that society functions best when people rule themselves without any laws or governing authorities. Anarchy occurs when prevailing authorities are overthrown or removed, leading to everyone becoming their own authority. Examples of anarchy can be seen during riots, where the police are fought back, and the crowd turns into a destructive entity.

While the idea of a society operating without oversight may seem appealing, the reality is far from ideal because the Bible teaches that the heart of man is inherently evil (Genesis 6:5; Romans 3:10; Jeremiah 17:9). Since the Garden of Eden, humanity has had a desire for self-rule (Genesis 3:1–7). The motivation behind most sins is the insistence on being one's own god and not wanting anyone else, including our Creator, to tell us what to do. We often imagine that throwing off all restraints equals freedom and that if we were left alone, we and our neighbors could peacefully coexist without the enforcement of laws and standards. However, history has shown that this utopian dream has never come true. Every society that has experimented with anarchism has ultimately descended into anarchy and disorder.

God instituted laws from the beginning of human history (Genesis 2:16–17). Laws serve as boundaries that keep us safe and ensure fairness and honesty in our interactions with others. However, boundaries must come with consequences for violating them; otherwise, they are merely suggestions. Without consequences, opinions become the basis for rules, and since everyone has a different opinion, it becomes challenging to build a civilization based on varied opinions. For example, one person may believe it is right to love our neighbors while another may think it is right to harm them. In such cases, whose viewpoint should prevail? The battle between opposing views can easily lead to anarchy.

The Bible, specifically Romans 13:1–7, tells us that God designed government, and one of its primary purposes is to prevent anarchy. Along with the divine authority given to governing bodies comes the power to enforce the established boundaries. There were a few instances in biblical history when anarchy prevailed, and "everyone did what was right in his own eyes" (Judges 17:6, ESV; Deuteronomy 12:8). However, it never ended well. Such periods were characterized by blatant idolatry, further lawlessness, and the breakdown of society. God had to intervene and send judges and later kings to restore order and keep the peace. When anarchy rules a culture, it becomes vulnerable to organized enemies seeking to overthrow it.

According to God's plan, we are not meant to live in anarchy or pursue anarchism. Although we may disagree with unjust laws or unwise lawmakers, we should thank God for any system of government that protects our freedoms and lives. As Christians, we are called to live peacefully under the governing authorities (1 Timothy 2:2), pay our taxes (Matthew 22:21), get involved in local government as we feel led, and pray for those in authority over us (1 Timothy 2:1–3). We should obey our authorities in all things unless they directly contradict God's commands (Acts 5:29). In such cases, civil disobedience aligns with God's Word.

Why This Matters

Understanding the biblical perspective on anarchy is important because it helps us navigate our roles as Christians within society. Anarchy may seem appealing at times when we feel oppressed or dissatisfied with the current state of affairs. However, as believers, we must remember that God has established systems of authority for our benefit and protection. By respecting and submitting to these authorities, we can contribute to a peaceful and orderly society while honoring God's commands.

Think About It

  • How does the concept of anarchy challenge your understanding of personal freedom and autonomy?
  • Can you think of any instances in history or current events where anarchy has led to negative consequences?
  • How can you engage with your local government in a way that aligns with biblical principles and promotes positive change?
