'Overcoming Bible Arrogance: A Guide for Humble Christian Living'

Bible Arrogance
The concept of arrogance is mentioned over 200 times in the NIV Bible, and in almost every instance, it is a behavior or attitude that is detested by God. The Bible teaches us that those who are arrogant and have a haughty heart are an abomination to Him. Proverbs 16:5 states, "Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished." Additionally, one of the seven things that God hates, as mentioned in Proverbs 6:16-19, is "haughty eyes" or a "proud look."
Jesus Himself spoke about the defiling nature of what comes out of a person, listing thirteen characteristics of those who are outside of God's favor. Among these characteristics, arrogance is considered alongside sexual immorality and murder (Mark 7:20-23). In the New Testament, there are two Greek forms of the word arrogance used, both essentially conveying the same meaning. One form means "swelling" or "extravagant," as used in references to "arrogant words" (2 Peter 2:18; Jude 1:16). The other form means a "puffing up of the soul" or "loftiness, pride" (2 Corinthians 12:20).
As believers, it is crucial for us to recognize that arrogance or a pompous attitude is contrary to godliness (2 Peter 1:5-7). Arrogance is nothing more than an overt display of one's sense of self-importance (2 Timothy 3:2). It reflects a mindset that says, "The world revolves around me." Instead of arrogance, the Bible teaches us the opposite. In Paul's letter to the church in Corinth, he describes love as patient and kind, not envious or boastful, and not arrogant (1 Corinthians 13:4; Romans 12:3).
Having a boastful attitude and thinking that "I'm better than you" destroys our relationships with others. Jesus taught us to put others before ourselves, emphasizing the importance of being a servant to others. He said, "But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:43-45).
The apostle Paul echoed these sentiments in his letter to the church in Philippi, urging them to do nothing out of rivalry or conceit but to count others as more significant than themselves (Philippians 2:3). This stands in stark contrast to the competitive nature of the world today, where self-promotion often takes precedence. As Christians, our behavior towards others should imitate that of Christ, who taught us to serve one another (John 13:14). While the world encourages us to strive for success and accumulate possessions, Jesus commands us to be humble. He said, "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted" (Luke 14:11; James 4:6).
When it comes to our attitudes towards God and our fellow human beings, the Bible offers two promises. First, it assures us that the arrogant will be punished (Proverbs 16:5; Isaiah 13:11). Secondly, Jesus declared, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3). Therefore, it is important for us to remember that "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5; Proverbs 3:34).

Understanding the concept of arrogance and its implications is essential for Christians. Arrogance not only goes against God's teachings but also damages our relationships with others. By recognizing the destructiveness of arrogance, we can strive to cultivate humility in our lives and treat others with love and respect.
