'Biblical Sanctuary: Finding Refuge and Hope in the Scriptures'

Bible Asylum
In the Bible, we find examples of asylum seekers seeking refuge in foreign lands due to the danger they face in their home country. Asylum seekers are individuals who appeal to another country for protection because they have a reasonable fear of persecution based on factors such as race, national origin, religion, political opinion, or membership in a social group. Seeking asylum is different from illegally immigrating to a country; it is a legal process that allows individuals in genuine danger to seek protection from arrest or extradition.
Cities of Refuge in the Old Testament
In the Old Testament, God instructed the Levites to set apart six cities of refuge where individuals who had unintentionally killed someone could find asylum until their case could go to trial (Exodus 21:13; Deuteronomy 19:2–13; Joshua 20:1–6). These cities provided a place of safety for the accused killer, protecting them from anyone seeking vengeance. If the killing was found to be unintentional, asylum was granted within the city of refuge until the death of the high priest. After the death of the high priest, the asylee could leave the city of refuge and travel freely.
Biblical Instructions on Treating Asylum Seekers
As Christians, we have clear biblical instructions on how to treat asylum seekers and refugees. The New Testament emphasizes the importance of love and compassion towards others. Galatians 6 encourages believers to do good to all people, especially those who belong to the family of believers. First John 3:18 reminds us that love should not be merely expressed in words but in actions and truth. Therefore, our treatment of those seeking asylum reflects our relationship with Jesus and our commitment to following His teachings.
In the Old Testament, God also expressed His heart for foreigners residing among His people. In Leviticus 19:33–34, God instructed the Israelites not to mistreat foreigners but to treat them as their own, loving them as themselves. This command is a reminder that the Israelites were once foreigners in Egypt, and God expects His people to extend kindness and hospitality to those in need. Leviticus 19:9–10 further instructs the Israelites to leave the gleanings of their fields for the poor and the foreigners among them.
The Importance of Advocacy and Support
As Christians, we have a responsibility to advocate for justice and fairness for asylum seekers. One way we can fulfill this responsibility is by helping them navigate the legal processes and advocating on their behalf to obtain the necessary permissions for legal residence. By showing compassion and support, we can make a positive impact on the lives of those seeking asylum.
Spiritual Asylum in Christ
In addition to physical asylum, the concept of spiritual asylum is found in Jesus. Just as the cities of refuge provided safety and rescue from danger, Jesus is the refuge in whom sinners find safety and rescue from sin and death (Hebrews 6:18). We run to Christ to escape the danger posed by sin, the condemnation of sin, the wrath of God, and an eternal separation from Him. Jesus offers safety and salvation to all who seek refuge in Him.

Understanding the biblical perspective on asylum seekers helps us develop a compassionate mindset towards those in need. As Christians, we are called to love others as ourselves and extend kindness and support to those who are vulnerable. Recognizing the biblical instructions on treating asylum seekers allows us to reflect God's heart for justice, fairness, and compassion.
