Backstabbing is a form of betrayal, where someone poses as a friend but then betrays you, often through slander or passive-aggressive actions. It lacks the courage of honest confrontation and seeks revenge without revealing its motives. In the Bible, we see an example of backstabbing in the story of David and his close friend turned traitor.

Betrayal by a Close Friend

In Psalm 55, David expresses his anguish over being betrayed by someone he considered a close friend. He says, "If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship" (Psalm 55:12-13). Many scholars believe that David is referring to Ahithophel, his counselor who joined Absalom's revolt against him.

This betrayal hurt David deeply because it came from someone he trusted and had a close relationship with. The backstabber not only betrayed him but also spread lies and deserted him when he needed support the most. Such acts of backstabbing go against the commandments of God to walk in love and show kindness towards others.

The Lack of Love and Hypocrisy

Backstabbers fail to walk in love as God commands us to do (Ephesians 5:2; 2 John 1:6). They are focused on their own interests rather than considering the well-being of others (Philippians 2:4). Condemnation and the Golden Rule

The Bible strongly condemns backstabbing and all its associated behaviors. Proverbs 10:18 says, "Whoever conceals hatred with lying lips and spreads slander is a fool." Backstabbers are considered foolish because they reject honesty, love, reconciliation, and kindness. They go against Jesus' Golden Rule, which instructs us to treat others as we would like to be treated (Matthew 7:12).

Those who tend to engage in backstabbing should carefully evaluate their motives and attitudes in light of Scripture's commands. We cannot earn the trust of others or have a positive influence on their lives when we are known for betraying them.
