Beauty is a subjective concept, often described as being in the eye of the beholder. Each person has their own definition and understanding of what is beautiful. However, it is important to consider that God also has His own concept of beauty. When determining beauty, God does not rely on outward appearances or physical attributes. In the Bible, we see this emphasized when the prophet Samuel was searching for the next king of Israel. Samuel was impressed by Eliab's appearance, but God told him, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7).
God's concept of beauty goes beyond external factors such as origin, culture, or social rank. He does not show favoritism based on these aspects. In fact, God gladly accepts those who revere and obey Him, regardless of their background or circumstances. The apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 3:26-28, "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
To understand God's concept of beauty further, we can look at the qualities that He cherishes in people. Throughout the Bible, we see individuals who exhibited great beauty in God's eyes due to their faith and service. Noah's trust in God led him to build an ark far from water. Abraham trusted God's promise so implicitly that he was willing to sacrifice his son. Moses surrendered complete control of his life to God and became known for his meekness. David dedicated himself to doing God's will wholeheartedly. Daniel remained faithful to God despite facing challenges. Peter, Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy were also ruled by God in every decision they made. These qualities of faith and obedience were what made these individuals beautiful to God.
It is important to note that physical appearance does not determine one's beauty in God's eyes. The Bible rarely provides details about the physical appearance of these individuals. Their beauty was not defined by their physique or outward attractiveness, but rather by their faith and service.
In 1 Peter 3:3-5, the apostle Peter directs Christian women to focus on inner, spiritual qualities in order to be truly beautiful in God's sight. He writes, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful." Peter is not prohibiting nice clothes or hairstyles; rather, he emphasizes that a gentle and quiet spirit holds greater value in God's eyes.
God's concept of beauty can also be seen through the qualities He desires in His people. The Beatitudes, found in Matthew 5:3-12, reveal some of these qualities. They include recognizing one's spiritual poverty, mourning over wickedness, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, showing mercy, having a pure heart, and being a peacemaker. The epistles further highlight attributes valued by God, such as maintaining faith during hardships, controlling one's tongue, enduring personal harm for the sake of the church's influence, making sacrifices for others' well-being, and living by Christian convictions despite ridicule.
It is essential to recognize that spiritual beauty must never be neglected or taken for granted. Just as neglect can turn a beautiful appearance into something unattractive, neglecting a life of righteousness can also diminish spiritual beauty. Therefore, it is crucial to continually nurture and cultivate the qualities that God considers beautiful.
