Bible Budgeting: Being Good Stewards of God's Resources

Budgeting is an essential tool for managing our finances and ensuring that we live within our means. Just as successful businesses use budgets to track their expenditures and profits, many families also rely on budgets to avoid financial trouble. While the Bible does not specifically mention the word "budget," it does provide guidance on stewardship, which encompasses managing resources wisely. Stewardship in the Bible

In biblical times, a steward was a person entrusted with overseeing the property, money, and even the family of a wealthy employer. Stewards were expected to manage well, with the master of the house desiring his wealth to increase and his property to be well-maintained (Matthew 25:14–30). An example of a faithful steward in the Bible is Joseph. Despite being a slave, Joseph earned the trust of his master, Potiphar, who put him in charge of everything he owned (Genesis 39:2–6). Later, when Joseph became Pharaoh's assistant, he demonstrated excellent stewardship by storing up grain in preparation for a coming famine (Genesis 41:39–41). In a sense, Joseph budgeted the grain to ensure its longevity.

Wisdom and Folly in Financial Matters

The book of Proverbs offers valuable insights into economic issues, including the importance of saving money and avoiding wastefulness. Proverbs 21:20 (NLT) states, "The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get." This proverb implies that having a plan—a budget—for managing resources is commendable. Wisdom leads to conserving assets for the future, while folly results in excessive spending, recklessness, or squandering everything away.

Ephesians 5:15–16 advises believers to be wise in how they live and make the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of redeeming time when He said, "We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work" (John 9:4). Budgeting time allows us to exercise self-control, a fruit of the Spirit that enables us to be more fruitful in our service to the Lord (Galatians 5:22).
