Legalism is a term commonly used among Christians to describe a doctrinal position that emphasizes strict adherence to a system of rules and regulations for salvation and spiritual growth. While the word "legalism" does not appear in the Bible, it refers to a position that is opposed to the concept of grace.

What is Legalism?

Legalists believe in the importance of following rules and regulations to achieve righteousness and holiness. They often fail to grasp the true purpose of the Old Testament law of Moses, which serves as a "schoolmaster" or "tutor" to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). However, even true believers can fall into legalistic tendencies.

Instead of legalism, Christians are called to be gracious towards one another. Romans 14:1 instructs us to accept those with weak faith without passing judgment on disputable matters. Unfortunately, some legalistic believers are so passionate about non-essential doctrines that they exclude others from fellowship simply because they hold different viewpoints. This kind of exclusivity is also a form of legalism.

The Pitfalls of Legalism

Many legalistic believers today make the mistake of demanding absolute adherence to their own interpretations of the Bible and their own traditions. For instance, some may believe that avoiding tobacco, alcoholic beverages, dancing, or watching movies are necessary for spiritual growth. However, avoiding these things does not guarantee spirituality.

The apostle Paul warns against legalism in Colossians 2:20-23. He questions why believers would submit themselves to rules such as "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!", which are based on human commands and teachings. While these regulations may seem wise and self-disciplined, they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Legalism may create an appearance of righteousness and spirituality, but it fails to produce genuine inward transformation. It becomes focused on outward performance rather than an internal change of heart.

Avoiding Legalism

To avoid falling into the trap of legalism, Christians are encouraged to hold fast to the words of the apostle John in John 1:17, "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." This reminds us of the importance of grace and truth as found in Christ, rather than relying solely on rules and regulations.

Additionally, we are called to be gracious, especially towards our fellow believers. Romans 14:4 reminds us that it is not our place to judge someone else's servant, as each believer is accountable to their own master. Romans 14:10 also cautions against looking down on or judging our brothers and sisters in Christ, as we will all stand before God's judgment seat.

However, it is crucial to note that while we should be tolerant of differing opinions on non-essential matters, we cannot accept heresy. Jude 3 encourages us to contend for the faith that was once entrusted to the saints. This means we should be discerning and test the spirits to ensure they are aligned with God's truth.

Why This Matters

Understanding and avoiding legalism is important for Christians because it can hinder spiritual growth and distort our understanding of God's grace. Legalism places emphasis on external rules and regulations instead of nurturing a genuine relationship with God. It can lead to judgmental attitudes, exclusivity, and a lack of love and acceptance within the body of Christ.
