Classism is a form of prejudice that involves treating people differently based on their social class. This can include biases related to race, economic status, education, or ethnicity. In Biblical times, classism was prevalent in Jewish society. Samaritans were looked down upon because of their nationality, and tax collectors were despised due to their occupation. Additionally, anyone who was not Jewish, known as a Gentile, was considered "unclean." The Romans ruled over the Jews, and the Pharisees and religious leaders held power over all spiritual matters. This created a strict social hierarchy where certain individuals were seen as superior while others were treated as second class.

However, Jesus challenged the classism of his time through his actions and teachings. Despite being born into a working-class family, Jesus could have chosen a position of power and authority. Instead, he associated with those who were considered outcasts and marginalized. He ate with tax collectors and sinners, choosing to honor them rather than demeaning them. He also selected fishermen and a tax collector as his disciples, demonstrating that social status did not determine one's worthiness in God's eyes.

Furthermore, Jesus broke down cultural barriers by interacting with Samaritans and even using a Samaritan as the hero in one of his parables. He also elevated the role of women by ensuring they were the first to witness and share news of his resurrection.

The teachings of Christianity challenge classism by emphasizing equality among all believers. The Bible explicitly condemns classism in the church, stating that believers should not show favoritism based on social status. According to the Bible, all people are sinners and equally undeserving of forgiveness. When Jesus sacrificed himself for humanity's sins, his redemption extended to everyone who believes in him.

In the apostle Paul's writings, he emphasizes that in Christ, there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile, slave and free, or male and female. The ground is level at the foot of the cross, as all people are equally in need of salvation and equally saved by God's grace through faith. This understanding undermines worldly notions of class, caste, and social standing.

As Christians, it is our duty to follow Jesus' example and treat all individuals with dignity and respect, irrespective of their social status. We are called to serve others and act as ministers of reconciliation. Rather than using our position in Christ to assert superiority, we should strive to become relatable and approachable to those who have not yet experienced God's love and grace.
