Bible Competition
Competition is a prevalent activity in various aspects of our lives today. When we think of competition, we often associate it with sports events. However, competition extends beyond the physical realm and into the spiritual realm as well. As believers, competition is crucial for us to achieve spiritual victory and faithfully follow Jesus Christ.
Jesus Himself engaged in a competition with Satan in the wilderness, and He emerged victorious by using the Word of God (Matthew 4:1-11). In the same way, we, as believers, engage in a spiritual battle for the souls of lost people by sharing the gospel with them. We must compete with alternate worldviews and false truth claims to defeat them.
Competition is also beneficial for communities in the business world. It helps to restrict inflation by pushing companies to sell their products at lower prices to stay competitive. Moreover, competition compels companies to improve their products to earn customer trust. Healthy competition in the business world encourages innovation and better customer experiences.
However, there are some who argue against competition, particularly in certain communities that try to eliminate it. For example, some children's sporting organizations play games where no score is kept. While there is value in teaching children to be gracious in victory and giving glory to God, eliminating competition altogether ignores its benefits. Direct competition teaches children the value of hard work and striving towards goals.
Even among Christians, some claim that competition is inherently bad because winning can make the loser feel bad. They often refer to Paul's words in Philippians 2:3-5 where he encourages humility and considering others as more important than ourselves. However, it is important to note that Paul also used competitive sporting events as illustrations for spiritual truths. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, he compares competitions among runners and boxers to emphasize the importance of discipline in our spiritual lives. This suggests that competition itself is not sinful but rather the heart attitudes we possess when competing.
It is essential to recognize that the most extreme form of competition is war, where people compete for domination, often resulting in death. Jesus Himself went to the cross to do battle against the effects of sin and death. He will ultimately defeat all His enemies at His second coming (1 Corinthians 15:25-26; Revelation 19:14-15, 21). As believers, we are called to be more than conquerors in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37), tearing down strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4), and fighting the good fight (1 Timothy 6:12; 2 Timothy 4:7).
While the Bible does not explicitly forbid competition, it does caution against sinful attitudes that can arise during competition. Scripture reminds us to do all things for God's glory (1 Corinthians 10:31), and this includes competitions. Eric Liddel, a famous Olympic athlete and missionary to China, exemplified the right attitude towards competition. He recognized his God-given talent for running and felt God's pleasure when he competed.
It is important to note that the worst kind of competition is when people reject God's gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Those who remain God's enemies by rejecting His forgiveness and eternal life will ultimately be defeated and face His wrath. God's desire is for everyone to repent and believe in Him, receiving the gift of eternal life.
Why This Matters:
Competition plays a significant role in our lives, both physically and spiritually. Understanding competition from a biblical perspective helps us navigate its complexities and engage in healthy competition that aligns with God's principles. By recognizing that competition can be an opportunity to glorify God and serve others, we can approach it with the right attitude and strive for spiritual victory.
Think About It:
- How can we ensure that our competitive pursuits align with biblical principles?
- In what ways can competition be used as an opportunity to share the gospel and defeat false truth claims?
- How can we teach children the value of healthy competition while instilling humility and graciousness in victory?
- Reflect on a time when you experienced healthy competition. How did it shape your character and relationship with God?
- Consider the ultimate competition between God and Satan. How does this impact your understanding of the spiritual battle we face as believers?
