Confidence is a popular topic in today's society. We are often encouraged to think confidently, be self-assured, and live boldly. But what does the Bible say about confidence? Confidence in the Flesh

The Bible warns us against having confidence in the flesh. In Philippians 3:3, Paul writes, "Have no confidence in the flesh." This statement was made to counter those who believed they could earn acceptance from God based on their heritage, training, or religious devotion. The Bible teaches that God is not impressed by human achievements or credentials. Our resumes and genealogies hold little significance in His eyes.

Foolish Confidence

Proverbs 14:16 tells us that a righteous person departs from evil, but a fool rages in his confidence. This verse warns us against arrogantly assuming that sin has no consequences. To have confidence that we can engage in sinful behavior without facing any repercussions is foolish.

Confidence in God

If we are to have confidence in something, the Bible tells us that it should be in God. Psalm 118:8-9 states, "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes." Those who put their trust in government, finances, other people, or themselves will ultimately be disappointed. However, those who place their confidence in God will never be ashamed (Romans 10:11).

Hebrews 4:16 encourages us to approach the throne of grace with confidence, knowing that we can receive mercy and find grace in our time of need. When the apostles Peter and John stood before the Sanhedrin, their courage astonished their opponents. The Sanhedrin recognized that these men had been with Jesus (Acts 4:13). Through our relationship with Christ, we can follow God with full confidence in His wisdom, power, and plan.

Confidence in God's Work

Paul provides another source of confidence in Philippians 1:6 when he says, "Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." Paul expresses his confidence that God will continue to work in the lives of His children. This assurance enables us to stand firm in the truth and trust that God will guide us.

A biblical self-confidence is not rooted in our own abilities or achievements but rather in our trust in God's character and promises.
