Courage is a prominent theme in the Bible, often referred to as "good cheer" or "boldness and confidence." In the Bible, courage is presented as the opposite of fear. God consistently commands us to have courage and not be afraid, and He always provides a reason behind this command. That reason is God Himself, His nature, and His perfect plans.

The Reason for Courage

In various incidents throughout the Bible, God commands courage and provides reasons to be courageous. For example, when God calms Abram's fears after his battle with the kings of Sodom and the captivity of Lot, He says, "Fear not, [for] I am your shield" (Genesis 15:1). Similarly, when Hagar was despairing for her life and that of her child in the wilderness, the angel of the Lord tells her, "Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is" (Genesis 21:17). These instances demonstrate that our courage can stem from our confidence in God's protection and guidance.

In the New Testament, we see examples of courage being commanded in response to God's divine intervention. The angel of the Lord tells Mary to have courage despite the trial of being pregnant with Jesus by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. The reason for her courage is that she has found favor with God (Luke 1:30). Similarly, the shepherds are commanded to be of good cheer and have courage by the angel who brings them good tidings of great joy (Luke 2:10). In each case, the courage commanded is a result of understanding God's foreknowledge and sovereignty.

Confidence in God's Promises

God's promises also provide a basis for our confidence, courage, and good cheer. Proverbs 3:25-26 states, "Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared." This verse assures us of God's superintending care and protection. Those who reject Him lack this care, but for those who have faith in Christ, there is no need to fear.

Luke 12:32 further reinforces this promise, stating that it is God's good pleasure to give us the kingdom. This great promise forms the foundation of our confidence, courage, and good cheer. By placing our faith in Christ for salvation, we can trust in God's unwavering love and provision.

Why This Matters

Understanding courage in a biblical context is crucial for every believer. Courage allows us to overcome fear and face challenges with confidence, knowing that God is with us and working all things for our good (Romans 8:28). It empowers us to trust in His promises and rely on His strength rather than our own.

Courage also enables us to fulfill God's purposes and live out our calling as Christians. In a world filled with uncertainties and trials, having courage rooted in God's character helps us navigate difficulties and stand firm in our faith.
