Bible Disrespect

Respect is a fundamental virtue emphasized in the Bible. It involves acknowledging and admiring another person's worth, position, abilities, qualities, or achievements. On the contrary, disrespect is the failure to recognize someone's value or actively demeaning them. In the Bible, respect is particularly associated with honoring elders, authority figures, Jesus Christ, and humanity in general.

Honoring Elders

The Bible emphasizes honoring and respecting elders due to their age and experience. Leviticus 19:32 instructs people to "rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly." Disrespecting elders is considered dishonorable (Deuteronomy 28:50, ESV). The apostle Paul advises Timothy to treat older men with gentleness and respect, as one would treat a father figure (1 Timothy 5:1). By respecting our elders, we acknowledge their wisdom gained through experience.

Respecting Authority Figures

Authority figures, including political leaders, church overseers, spiritual leaders, parents, and husbands, are also deserving of respect according to the Bible. 1 Peter 2:17 instructs believers to "show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor." This includes respecting good fathers who discipline their children (Hebrews 12:9) and even slaves respecting their masters, even if they are harsh and unjust (1 Peter 2:18). Respecting authority figures is an acknowledgment of their God-given roles and responsibilities.

Jesus Christ's Deserving Honor

Jesus Christ deserves the highest honor and respect from mankind. However, when He came to save humanity, He was met with disrespect. In His own hometown of Galilee, Jesus was not given the honor He deserved (John 4:44). The parable of the landowner and the tenant vinedressers illustrates this point. The landowner represents God, and His beloved son represents Jesus. Despite expecting respect, the tenants showed the ultimate disrespect by rejecting and killing the landowner's son (Matthew 21:33–40). This parable warns of the consequences for disrespecting Jesus Christ.

Respecting Humanity

Respect is not only owed to specific individuals but to humanity as a whole. Every person bears the image of God (Genesis 1:27), and therefore, deserves respect. Luke 18:2 tells a parable about a wicked judge who did not fear God or respect man; his disrespect for people is portrayed as wickedness. Christians are called to honor their fellow believers (Romans 12:10) and to show respect even to those who do not share their faith. When sharing the truth and hope in Christ, it is important to do so with gentleness and without showing disrespect (1 Peter 3:15).
