The Bible speaks extensively about the importance of unity and warns against division and divisiveness within the church. Jesus, before His crucifixion, prayed for His disciples to be one (John 17:20–23), emphasizing the need for unity among believers. It is important to understand that all believers are united with Christ and with each other, even though the practical outworking of that unity may sometimes be lacking.

The promotion of division, known as divisiveness, is condemned in the Bible. In Romans 16:17, the apostle Paul warns against those who cause divisions and put obstacles contrary to the teachings of God. Similarly, in 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul urges believers to be in full agreement, to avoid divisions or factions among them, and to be perfectly united in their thinking and judgment regarding matters of faith.

Division is a result of the flesh and goes against the fruit of the Spirit. The seriousness of division can be seen by the fact that it is listed alongside various sinful tendencies in Galatians 5:19–21, which warns that those who engage in such behavior will not inherit the kingdom of God. In the church at Philippi, Paul publicly addresses two women whose division was causing harm (Philippians 4:2).

The Bible instructs that those who cause division in the church should be subject to church discipline. In Titus 3:10, it is stated that divisive individuals should be warned twice and then avoided. This discipline is necessary to maintain unity within the church. Unity is not simply unity at all costs; it requires adherence to truth. Tolerating sin or false teaching does not promote true unity, and at times, excommunication may be necessary to preserve unity.

Sinful division stems from selfishness, and the remedy for it is found in Philippians 2. Believers are encouraged to be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. They are instructed to do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit but to count others as more significant than themselves. This selflessness is exemplified by Christ, who humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death.

Divisiveness is contrary to God's design for the church. Proverbs 16:28 states that a perverse person stirs up conflict and a gossip separates close friends. Those who purposefully cause division, incite discord, or provoke conflict are rebelling against God's intention for unity within the church.
