Bible Dowsing

Dowsing, also known as "water witching," is a practice that involves locating underground water or buried treasure by tapping into what dowsers believe to be spiritual energy. This method typically involves holding a forked rod with the straight end pointed toward the ground. As the dowser walks, it is believed that the rod moves up or down when they are directly above the location of water or other materials. While the Bible does not mention dowsing specifically, there are aspects of this practice that should raise concerns.

It is important to note that while anyone can walk around with a forked stick, dedicated dowsers believe that they possess a sixth sense to channel the earth's energy. They believe that the universe is communicating with them and revealing hidden truths. The act of using a dowsing rod is similar to using a Ouija board, as it attempts to gain information through the manipulation of "positive or negative energy" that is supposedly controlling an inanimate object.

While some argue that the earth has enough water sources for almost anyone to predict their location if they drill deeply enough, others point out that dowsers seem to have significantly higher accuracy than random guesses. However, it is important to assess this practice from a biblical perspective.

The Bible addresses practices similar to dowsing in Hosea 4:12, where it says, "My people consult a wooden idol, and a diviner’s rod speaks to them. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray; they are unfaithful to their God." The "diviner's rod" mentioned here has been interpreted as a magic wand, an Asherah pole, or some form of wooden staff used for predicting the future or seeking wisdom. The occult diviner's rod condemned in Hosea bears similarities to a dowsing rod, which is also referred to as a "divining rod" due to its purpose of divining the location of water or precious metals. According to Hosea, the Lord places divining rods, idolatry, and prostitution in the same category. However, why would God be opposed to a seemingly harmless method of discovering water sources?

The key point here is that dowsing is a form of divination, which is strictly forbidden by God (Deuteronomy 18:10; 2 Kings 17:17; Leviticus 19:26). Divination involves attempting to predict the future or uncover secret knowledge through supernatural means other than seeking the Lord. Sorcery, divination, witchcraft, and other occult practices have been part of human history since ancient times. These practices were one of the reasons why God dealt severely with the Canaanite nations and commanded His people not to engage in them (Deuteronomy 18:14; Micah 5:12).

Dedicated dowsers often refer to the force behind their practice as a spiritual energy guiding the universe. In Acts 16:16–18, we encounter a slave girl possessed by a divining spirit who pestered Paul and Silas by proclaiming their identities as "servants of the Most High God." Annoyed by this spirit, Paul turned around and commanded it to come out of her, and it did. In this passage, divination is directly linked to demonic influence. The girl knew who Paul and Silas were, and her knowledge was accurate because she obtained it through divination, just as dowsers profess to do. If there is indeed a force behind dowsing as claimed by many, and that force is not God, then who could it be?

In our world, there are only two spiritual forces at work: God and Satan. Both are real, both are spirits, and both possess power. However, they are not equals. Satan is a created being, a fallen angel whom God allows to rule within the boundaries He has established for this world (2 Corinthians 4:4; Luke 10:18). Any supernatural power that does not originate from God is evil. There are no neutral spirits, friendly guides, or positive energies. There is no "power of the universe" behind supernatural occurrences. We are either experiencing the mighty power of God or dabbling in Satan's playground.

As Christians, we should be cautious when tampering with supernatural forces that do not come from God. By inviting their involvement in our lives, we open the door to our enemy and become susceptible to his influence (1 Peter 5:8). If we seek out people who claim to predict the future or assert that "the earth speaks" to them, we should be aware that we are inviting the very demons of hell to impart knowledge to us. In Zechariah 10:2, God cries out to Israel, warning them about their actions: "The idols speak deceitfully, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain. Therefore the people wander like sheep oppressed for lack of a shepherd." When we forsake our Good Shepherd (John 10:11) in pursuit of knowledge that He has not revealed to us, we become easy prey for wolves (Matthew 10:16; Acts 20:29).

Why This Matters

Understanding the biblical perspective on dowsing and divination is essential for Christians. It helps us discern between practices that align with God's commands and those that do not. As believers, we are called to live according to God's Word and seek His direction in all areas of our lives. Engaging in divination or practices related to it can lead us away from God and open us up to spiritual deception.

Think About It

  1. How does the biblical perspective on divination and dowsing challenge or affirm your current beliefs or practices?
  2. Are there any areas in your life where you may be unknowingly engaging with supernatural forces that are not from God?
  3. How can you seek God's guidance and rely on His wisdom rather than resorting to divination or other occult practices?
