Education is an important aspect of life. In fact, even Jesus Himself grew in wisdom (Luke 2:52). The church has recognized the significance of education throughout history. For example, John Calvin advocated for universal education, believing that every child should be trained in various subjects, including religion. Martin Luther also emphasized the importance of education for understanding Scripture and the world. Many universities were founded by Christians as religious schools.

The Bible itself speaks to the value of education. In the book of Proverbs, a son is encouraged to heed his father's instruction, and the application of knowledge is called wisdom. The basis of all true knowledge is the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). This fear refers to awe and reverence for God's holiness and a desire to obey Him. Jesus said that knowing the truth sets us free (John 8:32). Acquiring spiritual knowledge and applying it to our lives allows us to serve God in spirit and truth (Romans 6:11-13).

As Christians, we are called to study and handle the Word of God correctly (2 Timothy 2:15). This requires diligence and exerting ourselves to gain understanding. Theology, the study of God, is foundational because our knowledge of God informs every other area of learning.

However, it is important to note that education alone does not combat ungodliness. Knowledge without love for God leads to pride (1 Corinthians 8:1). Nicodemus, a highly educated teacher, did not understand spiritual life (John 3:10). Paul, also highly educated, recognized that knowledge did not make him holy (1 Timothy 1:16). Additionally, there are those who are always learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 3:7).

Education begins with recognizing God's existence and His communication through creation, His Word, and His Son. As we learn more about God's creation and study His Word, our understanding of His wisdom and power deepens. Growing in knowledge of God's Son increases our love for Him and intensifies our service to Him.
