Bible Enchantment
In the Bible, enchantment refers to the practice of magic arts and sorcery, which is clearly forbidden in God's Law. The word "enchantment" can also be used to describe the feeling of being attracted or captivated by something interesting or exciting. However, enchantment, as it is referred to in the Bible, involves casting spells, curses, divination, fortune-telling, necromancy, astrology, and other forms of witchcraft.
Enchantment is seen as a form of idolatry and a fascination with Satan's territory. God has always commanded His people to listen and obey Him alone. While He allows us the freedom to choose our master, God strongly condemns any involvement with enchantment. In fact, He will not tolerate our idolatry or our fascination with such practices.
The Greek word "pharmakeia," translated as "witchcraft" or "sorcery" in Galatians 5:20, also implies the use of magic potions and mind-altering substances as part of a sorcerer's enchantment. This word is related to the English word "pharmacy," which is associated with drugs. In Revelation 18:23, an angel executing God's judgment upon Babylon mentions her refusal to repent from her "magic spell" or enchantments of every sort.
Understanding the full extent of what enchantment encompasses makes the Bible's prohibition against it even more relevant for our day. The abuse of mind-altering substances in our world today has its roots in satanic enchantment. Demons thrive in environments where drugs, witchcraft, necromancy, and psychics are celebrated. What may be enchanting to our sinful flesh is known by God to be destructive. Therefore, He prohibits any involvement with sorcery and enchantment on any level.
As Christians, we are called to go even further in refraining from enchantment. Ephesians 5:18 warns us against being controlled by both alcohol and the Holy Spirit. When we surrender our lives to Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside us, with the intention of transforming us into the image of Christ through our obedience to His Word. This transformation cannot happen when we choose to be controlled by anything other than Him. Seeking enchantments through drugs, alcohol, horoscopes, fortune-telling, or any other form of satanic control prevents the fruit of the Spirit from being produced in our lives.
The only enchantment that believers should seek is found in the presence of God Himself. The experience of intimate fellowship with Jesus surpasses any other form of enchantment. It is a deep and abiding relationship that brings joy, peace, and fulfillment. Like Paul and David, we can be captivated by the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord. To be caught up in the Holy Spirit, enraptured in worshiping Almighty God, is the highest form of enchantment and the only one we should ever pursue.
Why This Matters
Understanding the biblical perspective on enchantment is crucial for Christians today. In a world that often glamorizes witchcraft and occult practices, it is important to remember that God forbids any involvement with enchantment. By obeying this command, we protect ourselves from the destructive influences of Satan and his demons. We also open ourselves up to experiencing the true enchantment found in a deep relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Furthermore, as Christians, we are called to be light in the darkness and share the truth with others. By understanding why enchantment is forbidden and the consequences it can have on our lives, we can effectively communicate God's love and His desire for us to find true fulfillment and joy in Him alone.
