Bible Excellence
Excellence is the quality of being the very best at something. It is a trait that is valued and rewarded in every culture and society. As human beings, we have an intrinsic desire to see excellence. This desire for excellence comes from the fact that we are made in God's image. In Genesis 1:27, it is stated that God created us in His image, which means He imparted some of His character qualities to us. One of these qualities is excellence.
However, there are many things that hinder us from achieving excellence. Apathy, carelessness, and laziness can all prevent us from reaching our full potential. Our sinful nature, which is opposed to God and His excellence, also plays a role in hindering our pursuit of excellence. We are all born sinners, and this sin manifests itself in various ways in our lives.
God's cure for our careless ways is to remind us that He is our ultimate judge. We will be held accountable for how we spend our time, resources, and energy. In Matthew 12:36, it says that we will have to give an account for every careless word we speak. Similarly, in 1 Corinthians 3:13-15, it is mentioned that our work will be tested by fire to determine its quality. Therefore, striving for excellence should be a part of everything we do.
As Christians, we should strive for excellence because we are ultimately serving the Lord in all that we do. Colossians 3:23-24 states, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters... It is the Lord Christ you are serving." We should aim to present Him with nothing less than excellence.
Everyone has different gifts and talents given to them by God. We are expected to develop these gifts and use them with excellence to serve God and others. In Romans 12:6-8, Paul encourages us to use our gifts according to the grace given to us. Whether it is prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, or showing mercy, we should do it diligently and with excellence.
Joseph is an example of someone who demonstrated excellence in everything he did. Even when he was unjustly imprisoned, Joseph impressed others with his excellent character and work ethic. As a result, he rose to a position of power in the nation that had once enslaved him (Genesis 39:1-2, 20-23).
God does not promise to bless and help the lazy. In fact, there are numerous verses in Proverbs that speak against laziness and encourage diligence. Proverbs 6:6-11 talks about the ant as an example of diligence and warns against laziness. Proverbs 10:3-4 and Proverbs 13:4 also emphasize the importance of diligence.
Since God gives us His best in every way, we owe it to our Creator to pursue excellence in everything He has given us to do (Ecclesiastes 9:10). We should strive for excellence not only in our work ethic but also in our character and craftsmanship. While we may not be good at everything, we can all develop the skills and gifts that God has given us to serve Him and others better.
Why This Matters
Excellence is a characteristic that reflects God's nature. As Christians, our pursuit of excellence is not just about personal achievements but about honoring God and serving Him with the best of our abilities. It is a way for us to glorify God in all areas of our lives. By striving for excellence, we can make a positive impact on the world around us and be a testimony of God's goodness and faithfulness.
Think About It
- In what areas of your life do you struggle to pursue excellence? How can you overcome these obstacles and strive for excellence in those areas?
- How can you use your gifts and talents to serve God and others with excellence? Are there any specific areas where you feel called to excel?
- Reflect on the story of Joseph and his commitment to excellence. How can you learn from his example and apply it to your own life?
- Take some time to pray and ask God to reveal any areas of your life where you need to pursue excellence. Ask Him for the strength and guidance to do so.
