The concept of family is central in the Bible, both in a physical and theological sense. From the very beginning, God's plan for creation involved marriage and procreation. In Genesis 1:28, God blessed humans and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply, filling the earth. This established the foundation of the family as the building block of human society.
Throughout biblical history, the importance of family is emphasized. Family members are called to care for and look after one another. In Genesis 4:9, when God asks Cain about his brother Abel, Cain responds with a dismissive attitude, asking if he is his brother's keeper. This interaction highlights the expectation that family members should indeed take care of one another.
The biblical understanding of family is more communal compared to Western cultures today. For example, when God saved Noah from the flood, it was not just an individual salvation but salvation for him, his wife, his sons, and their wives (Genesis 6:18). Similarly, when God called Abraham out of Haran, He called him and his entire household (Genesis 12:4-5). The Abrahamic covenant included all males within the household, whether they were born into the family or part of the servant staff (Genesis 17:12-13).
In the Mosaic covenant, which is found in the Old Testament, there are laws and commandments that specifically address maintaining the integrity of the family. Two of the Ten Commandments deal directly with family relationships. The fifth commandment instructs children to honor their parents, preserving parental authority within the family structure. The seventh commandment prohibits adultery, protecting the sanctity of marriage. These commandments form the basis for other laws in the Mosaic Law that seek to safeguard marriage and family life.
The New Testament also emphasizes the importance of family relationships. Jesus speaks about marriage and divorce in Matthew 19, highlighting the sanctity of marriage. The apostle Paul provides instructions for Christian households, advising children to obey their parents and parents not to provoke their children in Ephesians 6:1–4 and Colossians 3:20–21. In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul explains that the unbelieving spouse can be sanctified through the believing spouse, providing an opportunity for salvation.
Beyond the physical aspect, the Bible also presents a theological concept of family. Jesus challenges traditional ideas of family in Matthew 12:46-50, stating that those who do the will of God are His mother, brothers, and sisters. This indicates that in the Kingdom of Heaven, spiritual family connections are more important than physical ones. John's Gospel further emphasizes this idea, stating that those who receive and believe in Jesus become children of God (John 1:12-13).
When we are born physically, we are born into a physical family. But when we are "born again" through faith in Jesus, we are adopted into God's spiritual family, the Church. This adoption makes God our Father and Jesus our Brother. In this spiritual family, there are no distinctions based on ethnicity, gender, or social standing (Galatians 3:26-29). Love for one another becomes the defining characteristic of this spiritual family (John 13:34-35).

The family unit is foundational to society and should be nurtured and protected.
