Flattery can be defined as giving excessive compliments for the purpose of gaining favor or advantage. While compliments are sincere acknowledgments of admiration, flattery benefits the flatterer rather than the recipient. The Bible has much to say about flattery, cautioning against its deceptive nature and highlighting the importance of discerning between genuine compliments and manipulative flattery.

The Deceptive Nature of Flattery

The book of Proverbs warns against the seductive power of flattery, particularly in the context of an adulterous affair. It emphasizes the need for wisdom in recognizing and separating flattery from sincere compliments. Flattery is often combined with lying, as those who engage in it are not concerned with truthfulness.

Proverbs 6:24: "keeping you from your neighbor's wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman."

Proverbs 7:5: "They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words."

Proverbs 7:21: "With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk."

Scripture warns that flattery can also be used within Christian circles under the guise of encouragement. False teachers have historically used flattery to deceive people and benefit themselves. The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonians, asserts that he and his fellow apostles did not resort to flattery in spreading the Gospel.

1 Thessalonians 2:5: "You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness."

Beware of False Teachers

False teachers may employ flattery as a means to increase their personal following. They may dilute the true message of the Gospel, turning it into a self-improvement program that caters to people's desire for personal greatness. These teachers often pepper their talks with cheerful verses and illustrations aimed at making their listeners feel good about themselves and the teacher. However, this form of flattery often deviates from the true message of Jesus.

Jesus' teachings were not centered on boosting self-importance but on dying to oneself, taking up the cross daily, and following Him. He emphasized that those who desire to keep their lives will lose them and that loving anyone more than Him makes one unworthy. Jesus spoke the truth, regardless of its popularity, and never compromised the Word of God for personal gain. As followers of Christ, we should strive to imitate His example.

Luke 9:23: "Then he said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.'"

Matthew 10:37–39: "Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it."

We must be vigilant against false teachers who use flattery to deceive and lead people astray. By recognizing the difference between genuine compliments and manipulative flattery, we can guard ourselves against falling into its trap.
