Bible Gangs
Gangs are groups of individuals who come together for protection and a sense of identity. Many organized gangs are involved in criminal activities such as drug trafficking, prostitution, extortion, and theft. Young people from impoverished neighborhoods often join gangs to protect themselves from other gangs, seeking the perceived money, power, and prestige that come with gang life. For some, the absence of a functional family unit drives them to seek belonging in gangs where male leaders become their role models.
Adults have their own form of gang life known as organized crime or the Mafia. These organizations are characterized by a sense of family and loyalty, with members staying committed due to fear of reprisal or out of loyalty to the group. The Mafia, which originated in Sicily and later expanded to Italy and the United States, is an international criminal gang involved in corruption, terror, and various illicit activities. It emerged in the United States during Prohibition in the 1920s and has since engaged in activities such as illegal alcohol production, prostitution, drug trafficking, territorial assassinations, and political bribery.
The Bible warns against the dangers of ungodly people joining forces to defy God. In fact, God scattered people across the earth and confused their languages at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11) when they united for ungodly purposes. While God desires unity, it should not come at the expense of righteousness (Psalm 133:1; 2 Chronicles 30:12). The Bible also cautions against associating with bad company as it can corrupt good morals (1 Corinthians 15:33).
Proverbs 1:8–19 advises young men to pursue wisdom rather than the paths of wickedness that gang life offers. It emphasizes that a life blessed by God avoids ungodly relationships (Psalm 1:1) and walks in step with the wicked (Proverbs 14:8). Wisdom discerns the right way, while folly deceives fools (Proverbs 14:8). Crime, whether organized or impulsive, is wicked and foolish, and God opposes those who choose evil (Psalm 34:16).
An example of how God views wicked gangs is found in 2 Kings 2:23–24. In this story, a gang of young men mockingly taunted the prophet Elisha. As a result, Elisha cursed them in the name of the Lord, and bears came out of the woods and attacked forty-two of them. This story demonstrates that God's judgment can be severe against those who engage in wicked practices.
Psalm 73 reflects the common struggle of wondering why gangs, organized crime, and the Mafia are allowed to prosper while righteous people suffer. However, the Bible reminds us that this life is temporary compared to eternity (James 4:14; 2 Corinthians 4:17). The wicked may gather in gangs to torment the helpless, but their days are numbered. God sees everything and keeps records (Proverbs 5:21). Those who honor the Lord will ultimately receive their reward (Psalm 23:6), and it is important not to envy sinners but to continue in the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 23:17).
