Hacking is an unauthorized intrusion into a computer or network, where individuals illegally bypass security features to achieve goals that differ from the original purpose of the system. While computers did not exist in biblical times, we can still find principles in the Bible that can be applied to hacking.

The Golden Rule and Privacy

Hacking is a digital form of breaking and entering, invading computer systems that store private data, vital statistics, and sensitive information. This act violates privacy and decency, going against the Golden Rule which states, "Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you" (Matthew 7:12). Just as we value our privacy and wouldn't want it invaded, we should never invade the privacy of others.

Theft and Selfish Ambition

Hacking also violates God's command against theft. Exodus 20:16 and Deuteronomy 19:11 specifically condemn stealing. Hackers often steal personal information for their own selfish reasons. Unless hacking is initiated by law enforcement in pursuit of justice, it is not defensible. Hacking rarely benefits the one being hacked and goes against the principle of Philippians 2:3, which instructs us to "do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit" but instead to value others above ourselves. If we truly valued others, we would never hack into their computer systems.

Hacking for Good

While hacking is generally seen as negative, there are situations where it may be necessary to save lives or property. Law enforcement sometimes utilizes the skills of technologically gifted individuals to catch other hackers with evil intent. In cases where hackers have infiltrated banks, government agencies, or credit card companies, it is crucial to stop them before significant damage occurs. National safety can also be compromised when hackers gain access to top-secret files. However, it is important that hackers who use their skills for the good of others are able to identify and stop the infiltration. When hacking skills are used to protect and serve, society benefits. But when these skills are used for selfish and dishonest purposes, the result is sinful.

As followers of Christ, we are called to uphold principles such as the Golden Rule and to value others above ourselves.
