Heritage is something that is handed down from the past, a legacy that may include property, reputation, traditions, or a position in life. For example, one might proudly embrace their Native American heritage.
The Bible has much to say about heritage, especially in the spiritual sense. In Ephesians 1:11, we learn that as children of God, we are given a spiritual heritage. When God promised Abram that he would become the father of a great nation in Genesis 12:1–3, He was establishing a new people. The land where Abram lived would become the heritage of his descendants (Genesis 17:8; Exodus 6:8; Jeremiah 12:14). After four hundred years of residing in Egypt, the Israelites left and eventually entered the Promised Land (Joshua 1:6). Although they had been in Egypt for so long, they retained their heritage as Israelites.
In the Bible, we see examples of fathers passing down their heritage to their children. Abraham's heritage was given to his son Isaac and grandson Jacob. On his deathbed, Jacob blessed his twelve sons (Genesis 49). The firstborn son in a family was often given a special heritage called the birthright. However, Esau gave away his birthright for a bowl of stew, showing low regard for his God-given heritage.
We also learn from Psalm 127:3 that children are a heritage from the Lord. God entrusts parents with raising and training their children to know and honor Him (Psalm 139:13–16; Deuteronomy 6:1–9). Our ultimate goal should be to invest our lives in service to God, which results in an eternal heritage that can never perish, spoil, or fade (1 Peter 1:4). This inheritance is kept in heaven for us.
