Homelessness in the Bible
The Bible addresses the issue of homelessness and emphasizes the importance of helping those in need, including those experiencing homelessness. Jesus himself experienced homelessness during his itinerant ministry, stating in Matthew 8:20 that he had nowhere to lay his head. He relied on the hospitality of others, staying in the homes of those who welcomed him or even spending nights outdoors. The apostle Paul also experienced periods of homelessness (1 Corinthians 4:11).
God expects his people to care for those who are homeless. In Leviticus 25:35, God commands the Israelites to support their fellow community members who are unable to provide for themselves and have no home. This command is echoed in Deuteronomy 15:7–11. The Bible strongly rebukes those who practice religion but neglect to care for the poor and homeless. Isaiah 58:6–7 states that true fasting includes sharing food with the hungry, providing shelter for the homeless, clothing the naked, and not turning away from one's own family.
The book of Proverbs teaches that giving to the poor is considered lending to the Lord, promising a reward for those who show kindness to the poor (Proverbs 19:17). On the other hand, those who ignore or refuse to help the poor may face negative consequences (Proverbs 28:27). In the New Testament, Jesus and his disciples regularly gave to the poor (John 13:29), and Jesus commands his followers to follow his example and care for the poor (Matthew 5:42). James emphasizes that faith must be accompanied by action and practical help for those in need (James 2:15–16).
The Bible acknowledges the harsh realities of poverty, social injustice, and homelessness that exist in society. It calls for believers to be radically different in how they view and treat their neighbors. Christians are encouraged to go out of their way to provide for the homeless and others in need, trusting that God will reward their actions in due time. In Luke 14:13–14, Jesus advises inviting the poor, crippled, lame, and blind to banquets, promising blessings and rewards that cannot be repaid in this life.
Every person, regardless of their social status or economic limitations, has intrinsic worth because they are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Exploiting or oppressing those who are weaker or poorer is considered wickedness in the Bible. Throughout Scripture, believers are called to show generosity, compassion, kindness, and mercy in tangible ways. Jesus himself exemplified this by serving others rather than seeking to be served (Mark 10:45).
