Introduction
Humility, as described in the Bible, is a heart attitude characterized by meekness, lowliness, and the absence of self. In Colossians 3:12 and other passages, the Greek word translated as "humility" literally means "lowliness of mind." It is important to note that humility is not merely an outward demeanor but a deep-rooted disposition. Jesus emphasized the significance of humility when He said that those who are "poor in spirit" would inherit the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:3). This implies that acknowledging our spiritual bankruptcy and recognizing our inability to save ourselves are essential for Christians.
The Essence of Humility
When we come to Christ as sinners, we must approach Him with humility. We come to Him recognizing that we have nothing to offer but our sin and our need for salvation. We acknowledge our lack of merit and complete inability to save ourselves. In humble gratitude, we accept His grace and mercy, commit our lives to Him and others, and "die to self" so that we can live as new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). It is crucial to remember that God has exchanged our worthlessness for His infinite worth and our sin for His righteousness. Our new life is lived by faith in the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us (Galatians 2:20). This true humility produces godliness, contentment, and security.
Humility in Action
Biblical humility is not only necessary for entering the kingdom of God but also for greatness within it (Matthew 20:26-27). Jesus serves as our ultimate model in this regard. He did not come to be served but to serve, and we are called to commit ourselves to serving others, considering their interests above our own (Philippians 2:3). This attitude goes against selfish ambition, conceit, and the strife that arises from self-justification and self-defense. Jesus demonstrated humility by humbling Himself as a servant, even to the point of death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). In our humility, we should be willing to put aside all selfishness and submit obediently to God and His Word.
The Blessing of Humility
God promises to give grace to the humble while opposing the proud (Proverbs 3:34; 1 Peter 5:5). Therefore, it is crucial for us to confess and put away pride. When we exalt ourselves, we position ourselves in opposition to God, who will, in His grace and for our own good, humble us. However, when we humble ourselves, God gives us more grace and exalts us (Luke 14:11). The apostle Paul is also an example of humility. Despite his great gifts and understanding, Paul considered himself the "least of the apostles" and the "chief of sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:9). Like Paul, those who are truly humble will find their joy in the grace of God and in the cross rather than in self-righteousness (Philippians 3:3-9).

Understanding humility from a biblical perspective is essential for every Christian. It reminds us that we come to Christ with nothing but our brokenness and need for salvation. Humility helps us recognize that our worth comes from God alone and not from our own achievements or abilities. It also compels us to serve others selflessly and consider their needs before our own.
