Throughout the Bible, incense played a significant role in the worship of God. When the Israelites were liberated from slavery in Egypt, God instructed them to build the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary that they used for worship during their desert journey. Burning incense inside the tabernacle was an essential part of their worship. The rising smoke symbolized their devotion ascending to God, and the fragrant aroma depicted His acceptance and pleasure with their worship.

The incense burned in the tabernacle had a specific blend instructed by God. It consisted of various plant and shellfish extracts, including sweet spices, stacte, onycha, galbanum, pure frankincense, and salt. The sweet spice stacte was made from the bark of myrrh bushes, onycha from ground mollusk shell scrapings, galbanum from the ferula plant resin, and frankincense from boswellia trees. Salt was added to symbolize purity.

The high priest was responsible for burning this specific blend of incense on the altar of incense in the Holy Place of the tabernacle. The altar was made of acacia wood overlaid with gold and stood three feet high with a horn on each corner. The high priest burned incense twice daily, once in the morning and again in the evening. On the Day of Atonement, a special ceremony involving incense took place where the high priest entered the Holy of Holies with incense burning in a censer.

God emphasized that the incense burned on the altar was holy and exclusive for worship. It was strictly forbidden for personal use or any other unauthorized purpose. The consequences for misuse were severe, as seen when Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, died for improper worship involving incense.

While originally only the high priest offered the sacred incense, there was a shift in practice revealed in the Gospel of Luke. Ordinary priests, like Zechariah, were also permitted to perform the offering. Zechariah's experience of placing incense on the altar coincided with the announcement of the birth of his son, John the Baptist.

The role of incense throughout the Bible symbolizes prayer and the relationship between God and His people. It is described as a pleasing aroma to God, reminiscent of the prayers and devotion of His people. This perspective is echoed in Psalm 141:2 when David writes, "Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!"
