'Biblical Decision-Making: Overcoming Indecision Through Faith'

Bible Indecision

Indecision is a common struggle that many people face when it comes to making decisions. It can manifest in various ways, such as having a difficult time making up one's mind or being unable to reach a consensus in a team collaboration. In the context of the Bible, indecision refers to a lack of strong conviction or resoluteness in matters of faith and obedience to God.

The Nature of Indecision

Indecisiveness often arises when we are faced with decisions that may lead to unpleasant consequences. There are times when remaining indecisive is wise, such as when we lack all the necessary information or when the issue is of little importance and expressing an opinion would only cause division. However, in general, indecision reveals a lack of commitment to absolute principles and a reluctance to speak up for those principles. In this sense, indecision can be seen as a weakness (John 12:43).

Biblical Examples of Indecision

Throughout the Bible, we find examples that illustrate the folly of indecision. One such example is Lot's wife, who perished because she could not decide between obeying God or looking back at Sodom (Genesis 19:26). Joshua, on the other hand, demonstrated resolute decision-making when he challenged the people of Israel to choose whom they would serve (Joshua 24:15). Elijah also confronted the indecisiveness of the Israelites on Mount Carmel, urging them to make a choice between serving God or Baal (1 Kings 18:21). Felix, when faced with conviction by the Holy Spirit through Paul's preaching, chose to delay making a decision until a more convenient time (Acts 24:25). Jesus Himself warned against trying to serve two masters (Matthew 6:24).

Personal Convictions and Indecision

Romans 14:5 addresses the issue of indecisiveness regarding personal convictions: "One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind." God has given us His Word to guide us in important matters, but He allows room for personal opinion and conviction in lesser matters as we seek to please Him. However, the Bible does not condone wishy-washiness or a lack of commitment. When we pray for wisdom, we are to believe that God hears and will answer (1 John 5:15; James 1:5). Doubtful or faithless prayer reflects spiritual indecisiveness.

Seeking Wisdom and Discernment

Seeking wisdom is essential in knowing which issues are worth being decisive about (Proverbs 2:2–6). In today's culture, where opinions abound on social media platforms, it is necessary to exercise discernment and avoid being hasty in forming strong opinions without proper information or education on a particular issue. Taking the time to hear all sides of a matter demonstrates wisdom (Proverbs 18:13, 17). However, when it comes to the fundamental principles of the gospel or the infallibility of God's Word, there should be no room for indecision (2 Timothy 3:16; John 17:17).

Overcoming Fear and Ignorance

Indecision often stems from the fear of man rather than a lack of knowledge (Galatians 1:10). As Christians, we have access to an abundance of information through the study of God's Word. Therefore, there is no excuse for ignorance regarding God's standards on moral, civic, and relational topics. It is important not to allow our own discomfort or political correctness to cause indecision regarding biblical truths. Our opinions should not challenge the timeless declarations of God.

Living with Conviction

Healthy Christians have settled minds on the things that truly matter while maintaining a humble and teachable attitude towards less important matters. They continue to study and seek God's guidance, forming godly convictions even in areas that may seem unclear. They are careful not to judge others who may serve God differently (Romans 14:1–4), but they are decisive about God's plan for their own lives. When we live in accordance with our convictions, we will not be easily swayed by every new idea or cultural trend. Indecisiveness about what God has declared to be true has no place in the life of a Christian.

Indecision can hinder our growth and effectiveness as Christians. It can prevent us from taking a stand for what is right and lead to a lukewarm faith. By understanding the significance of decisiveness and seeking wisdom from God, we can have a more impactful Christian walk.
