Is the Bible Infallible?
In Christian belief, the term "infallible" refers to something that is incapable of error and absolutely trustworthy. When we apply this term to the Bible, it means that the Bible is free from error and can be completely relied upon. The Bible claims its own infallibility in 2 Peter 1:19, which states, "We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable." This verse is followed by an explanation of how Scripture came to be, emphasizing that it did not originate from human interpretation but was spoken by prophets who were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20–21).
Another passage that implies the infallibility of Scripture is 2 Timothy 3:16–17, which states that "All Scripture is God-breathed" and has the power to thoroughly equip believers for every good work. The fact that Scripture is described as being "God-breathed" ensures its infallibility because God, who is perfect, cannot breathe out error. Additionally, the fact that the Bible equips believers thoroughly for service demonstrates that it guides us into truth, not error.
The doctrine of Scripture's infallibility is rooted in an understanding of God's perfect character. God's Word is described as perfect and refreshing to the soul in Psalm 19:7 because God Himself is perfect. In fact, the Lord Jesus is referred to as "the Word" in John 1:14, highlighting the close association between God and His Word.
It is important to note that the doctrine of infallibility applies only to the original documents of Scripture. Mistranslations, printing errors, and typos are human mistakes that can occur during the process of copying and translating the text. However, what the biblical writers originally wrote was completely free from error or omission because they were guided by the Holy Spirit. God is truthful and perfectly reliable (John 14:6; 17:3), and His Word shares these qualities (John 17:17).
The Bible claims complete perfection in multiple passages, such as Psalm 12:6, Psalm 19:7, and Proverbs 30:5. It is factual throughout and serves as a judge of our thoughts and attitudes, as Hebrews 4:12 states, "The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
The Bible is the sole objective source of all God has revealed about Himself and His plan for humanity. As God's infallible Word, it is inerrant, authoritative, reliable, and sufficient to meet our needs.
