Intuition is a fascinating and often mysterious aspect of human experience. It is the feeling that allows us to know certain things without fully understanding how or why. We all have moments when we say, "I had a feeling that was going to happen." In the context of faith, intuition takes on a special significance. As Christians, we believe that intuition is a gift from God, and when we learn how to develop and strengthen it, it can help us make wise decisions and navigate relationships.

Understanding Intuition

To understand intuition in the context of faith, we need to recognize that as human beings created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), we possess unique qualities beyond those found in the plant or animal kingdoms. We have a spirit that allows us to discern right from wrong and a conscience that bothers us when we make poor choices. We also have intuitive suspicions about things we know little about. While some people may be naturally more intuitive than others, all of us can develop this gift by tuning in to it intentionally.

For example, imagine a woman meeting a man for the first time. She may have an intuitive feeling that he is dishonest and lustful, even though there may be no obvious signs of it in their interaction. If she acts upon that intuition and later finds out that her suspicions were correct, it reinforces her trust in her intuition. She can then intentionally tune in to her intuition more often and heed its warnings. Similarly, a man may be prepared for a business merger but has an intuitive sense that there is more to the story. He decides to put the merger on hold and later discovers that his intuition was right. In both cases, these individuals strengthen their intuition by paying attention to it and acting upon it.

Discerning True Intuition

While intuition can be a valuable tool, it's important to note that our feelings can sometimes be wrong. Not all inner leanings should be heeded. The Bible warns us in Proverbs 16:25 that there is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death. We are prone to error and poor judgment due to our sin nature. If we rely solely on our own powers of discernment, we can easily be led astray.

In the book of Judges, we see a time in Israel's history when there was no king, and everyone did what seemed right in their own eyes (Judges 21:25). This led to chaos and anarchy. When we rely solely on our own viewpoints, which are often skewed, selfish, and influenced by evil suggestions, we distance ourselves from the wisdom of God. Seeking wisdom as the chief ambition is repeatedly emphasized in the Bible (Proverbs 2:3–5; 4:7; Ecclesiastes 7:12; Psalm 111:10). When we seek wisdom, our intuition can act as a safeguard against tragic mistakes.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

For Christians, intuition can be greatly enhanced by the presence of the Holy Spirit. He is the source of wisdom and understanding. Those who "walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:16, 25) have the privilege of accessing God's perspective on various life decisions as He guides us through His Word. We can develop this ability to hear God by spending time in His Word, engaging in worship, and practicing meditation.

A.W. Tozer, in his classic work, emphasizes that those who "find" God often have something in them that is open to heaven and urges them toward God. This spiritual receptivity influences intuition to such an extent that we can walk blamelessly before God (Philippians 2:15; 1 Thessalonians 3:13; Job 1:1). David, for example, would "sit before the Lord" (2 Samuel 7:18), enjoying His presence and quieting his spirit. When we quiet our minds and meditate on God's Word, our spirits become more attuned to hearing from God.

Trusting God's Guidance

As we seek God's guidance and pray for direction, He assures us that if we lack wisdom and ask for it, He will provide it (James 1:5). We can trust that we have the wisdom we've asked for and move forward in the way that seems wisest, knowing that the Lord is directing our steps (Psalm 37:23). When our intuition is rooted in God's Word, surrendered to the control of the Holy Spirit, and aligned with His wisdom, it can protect us from errors and help keep us on the straight path (Proverbs 4:26; 15:21; Isaiah 26:7).

Understanding and developing our intuition as Christians is important because it allows us to tap into the wisdom of God. It helps us make wise decisions, avoid disastrous choices, and discern truth from deception. By cultivating our intuition through prayer, meditation, and seeking God's guidance in His Word, we can align ourselves with His will and experience a deeper connection with Him.
