Bible Lawlessness
To be lawless means to act without regard to the law or to go against the established laws. In a sinful world, laws are necessary to maintain order and justice. The Bible refers to lawlessness as "iniquity" and views it as rebellion against God. Sin itself is defined as lawlessness, meaning that when we sin, we break God's law and reject Him. Satan, who rejected God, will one day empower the Antichrist, referred to as "the lawless one," who will rise to power in accordance with Satan's ways.
Lawlessness is contrasted with righteousness in the Bible. Those who have the nature of Jesus Christ, the righteous, detest lawless deeds. For example, Lot, a godly man living in Sodom, was tormented by the lawless deeds he witnessed. Christians are called to be law-abiding and follow the laws of society.
When a society ignores the law, it results in lawlessness and chaos. The time of the judges after Joshua's death in the Old Testament was marked by disorder because there was no centralized authority, and everyone did as they saw fit. An example of lawlessness in action is the riot in Ephesus described in the book of Acts. The rioters were confused and unsure of why they were rioting, ignored legal channels, and broke the law.
God has established human government to maintain order and promote righteousness in society. Rulers are appointed by God to punish wrongdoers and commend those who do right. Rebelling against authority is seen as rebelling against what God has instituted, and it brings judgment upon oneself.
The Bible connects man's lawlessness and rebellion against God with the need for His forgiveness. Through faith in Jesus Christ, our lawless deeds can be forgiven, and our sins can be covered by God's grace. Christ died on the cross to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify a people who are zealous for good works.
In the final judgment, many will claim a connection with Jesus based on their own deeds, only to be called "workers of lawlessness" whom Christ never knew. Those who practice lawlessness will face judgment, while those covered by the righteousness of Christ will shine like the sun.
