Bible Perseverance

Perseverance is a key theme in the Bible, and it is addressed in various contexts. The Scriptures teach that those who persevere in their faith will inherit eternal life (Revelation 2:7). Colossians 1:23 also emphasizes the importance of continuing in the faith, remaining grounded and steadfast, and not being moved away from the hope of the gospel. This means that those who ultimately attain salvation are those who persevere and continue to believe in the gospel.

The Arminian View

There are different views among Christians regarding the perseverance of the saints. The Arminian view suggests that it is possible for true Christians to turn away from God and not persevere. According to this perspective, salvation hinges on man's "free will" choice. If man has the freedom to choose salvation, then it is also possible for him to later reject God and lose his salvation.

The Biblical View

However, the Bible teaches that believers are "born again" by the Holy Spirit, leading them to have faith in Christ. All those who have been "born again" have eternal security and will persevere. The doctrine of the perseverance of the saints is based on the promise that God will bring to completion the good work He began in believers (Philippians 1:6). Jesus Himself declared that all whom the Father gives Him will come to Him, and none of them will be lost (John 6:37, 39).

Persevering in the Christian Life

In addition to perseverance in regard to salvation, there are also exhortations in the Bible to persevere in the Christian life. The apostle Paul, in his pastoral epistles to Timothy, urges him to watch his life and doctrine closely and persevere in them. By doing so, Timothy will save both himself and those who hear him (1 Timothy 4:16). This admonition applies to all Christians, as perseverance in godly living and holding fast to the truth are evidence of genuine conversion (John 8:31; Romans 2:7).

James also emphasizes the importance of persevering in the Christian life. He encourages believers to be not just hearers of the Word but doers, as those who only hear and do not act deceive themselves. Those who look into the perfect law of liberty and continue in it will be blessed in what they do (James 1:22-24). The more we persevere in the Christian life, the more God grants His blessings upon us, enabling us to continue persevering.

Persevering Under Trials

James further highlights the need to persevere under trials. Those who endure trials will be blessed and receive the crown of life that God has promised (James 1:12). True believers will not only be eternally secure in their salvation but will also persevere through affliction, sickness, persecution, and other trials that come their way. While living a godly life in Christ may result in persecution (2 Timothy 3:12), those who remain faithful will be kept secure by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guarantees our salvation and keeps us strong until the end, enabling us to stand blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 1:8).

Why This Matters

Understanding and embracing the concept of perseverance is crucial for every believer. It reminds us that our faith is not a one-time decision but a lifelong journey. Perseverance encourages us to hold fast to our beliefs, even when faced with challenges or doubts. It serves as a reminder that our eternal security is not dependent on our own strength or abilities but on the faithfulness of God.

Think About It

Consider the significance of perseverance in your own life. Are there areas where you struggle to persevere? Reflect on the exhortations in the Bible and seek God's strength to persevere. Take comfort in the assurance that God is faithful and will bring to completion the work He began in you.
