For example, in Leviticus 14, there is a description of the purification process for people who have been healed of leprosy. This ritual involved a priest, two live clean birds, cedarwood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop. One bird was sacrificed, while the other was set free. This symbolized both the cleansing and liberation from impurity. The idea behind these rituals was to restore fellowship with God and the religious community after a time of corruption.
Purification was also significant in the context of the tabernacle and the temple. Before performing their duties, priests underwent rigorous purification rituals. In Exodus 30:17–21, God instructed Moses to make a bronze basin for washing. Aaron and his sons were to wash their hands and feet before approaching the altar, ensuring their ceremonial cleanliness. This act of purification signified respect for the holiness of God and the sanctity of their service to Him.
New Testament Emphasis on Spiritual Purification
In the New Testament, there is a shift from an emphasis on ceremonial cleanliness to spiritual cleanliness. John the Baptist's ministry included a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, which signified purification of the heart. According to Jesus, purification involves a radical transformation of mind, heart, and spirit. This transformation is also emphasized in John 3:3, 5, where Jesus speaks of being born again through the Spirit.
Purification in the Writings of the Apostles
The writings of the apostles also highlight the significance of purification. In 1 John 1:7, the apostle John declares that if we walk in the light as God is in the light, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. The sacrificial death of Christ is how sinners are purified from all impurity, allowing them to stand justified before a holy God.
In 2 Corinthians 7:1, Paul urges believers to cleanse themselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. This suggests that believers have an active role in putting away sin and cooperating with the Holy Spirit to attain holiness. As believers live by the Spirit, they are called to keep in step with Him.
Purification for Eternal Life
The book of Revelation emphasizes that purification is necessary for entrance into the New Jerusalem. Revelation 22:14 states that those who wash their robes will have the right to eat from the tree of life and enter through the gates into the city. Earlier in Revelation 7:9, John sees a great multitude wearing white robes, symbolizing their purity. One of the elders explains that their robes have been made white by washing them in the blood of the Lamb (Revelation 7:14).
Purification before a holy God is a consistent and important theme throughout the Bible. From the rituals of the Old Testament to the regeneration of the Holy Spirit, purification is essential for salvation from sin and fellowship with God. As believers, we are called to live in holiness, experiencing God's cleansing and striving to reflect the character of Christ.
