Bible Purity

Purity is a concept that holds great significance in the Bible. It refers to freedom from anything that contaminates and the quality of being faultless, uncompromised, or unadulterated. Just as pure water is free from any impurities and pure gold has been refined to remove all dross, a pure life is one in which sin no longer determines the choices one makes.

God's Purity and Its Importance

Purity is important to God because He alone is truly pure. In Scripture, purity is often used to communicate holiness or perfection. For example, when Moses was building the tabernacle, God specified that items inside the Holy Place should be made "of pure gold." The oil and frankincense used in the tabernacle were also required to be pure. Moreover, God has "pure" eyes and speaks "pure" words. The New Jerusalem is even described as a city of "pure gold, as pure as glass."

God's creation was initially pure. When He created the heavens and the earth, everything was untainted by death, decay, pollution, or sin. God creates pure things because He Himself is pure. In Him, there is no confusion, contradiction, or compromise. Everything He does is good. Human beings were created to reflect His image and live in pure communion with Him.

However, sin corrupts purity. Impurity is often listed as something that separates us from the presence of God. In order to have fellowship with a holy God, we need to reclaim the purity that He originally intended for us. To ascend the mountain of the Lord and stand in His holy place, we must have clean hands and a pure heart.

Reclaiming Purity

In the Old Testament, people reclaimed purity by sacrificing animals according to God's specifications. God promised to purify them if they followed all His commands, observed His Sabbaths, and offered the designated sacrifices. Repentance and faith in a coming Savior, demonstrated through obedience to the Law, were sufficient for God to declare people righteous.

In the New Testament, purity is reclaimed through placing our faith in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We cannot be pure enough on our own to see God. Instead, we need Christ's righteousness credited to our accounts. This is what it means to be a Christian.

Sexual Purity

In contemporary usage, purity is often associated with sexuality. Sexual purity refers to freedom from immorality or perversion. Many individuals wear purity rings as a symbol of their commitment to saving sex for marriage. Sexual purity is closely related to holiness, and those who walk in holiness strive to remain sexually pure by abstaining from sexual activity before marriage and remaining faithful within marriage.

Living in Purity

Once we have been born again through faith in Jesus, we desire to live in purity. However, purity extends beyond just sexual behavior. God desires that we live purely in all our dealings with others. Purity should define our thought life, our words, and our actions.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." When our hearts are clouded with impurities, we cannot experience God's presence or hear His voice. However, when we rely on what Jesus has done for us and accept His righteousness, we will strive to forsake sin and live in purity of heart, enjoying fellowship with the God of purity.

Why This Matters

Understanding and striving for purity is important because it reflects the character of God Himself. Purity enables us to have a close relationship with Him and experience His presence in our lives. It also impacts our relationships with others and how we navigate issues of morality and sexuality.

Think About It

  1. How does purity impact your relationship with God and others?
  2. In what areas of your life do you struggle with impurity, and how can you strive for greater purity?
  3. How does understanding the concept of purity shape your understanding of God's character?
