The Value of the Bible Remnant
In the Bible, a remnant refers to a small group of people who are set apart by God for holy purposes. While remnants are often seen as insignificant, God assigns great value to them. This concept is mentioned in several places in the Bible. One such passage is Isaiah 10, where God pronounces judgment upon the Assyrians. He declares that He will punish the king of Assyria for his pride and arrogance. God also foretells how His people will turn back to Him as a result of His display of power. He states that a remnant of Israel, the survivors of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely on their oppressors but will truly rely on the LORD. This remnant will return to the Mighty God.
Throughout the Bible, there are other instances where remnants are mentioned, even if the term itself is not used. For example, Noah and his family were the remnant saved from the flood that destroyed millions of people on earth. Similarly, only Lot and his two daughters survived the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. In times when Elijah despaired, thinking he was the only one left in Israel who had not bowed down to idols, God assured him that there was a remnant of 7,000 faithful individuals.
God's sovereign choice regarding whom He saves can also be seen in the New Testament. The apostle Paul highlights this in Romans 9:27-28, where he quotes Isaiah and emphasizes that only a remnant of Israel will be saved. This implies that many will be cast off and lost. The word "remnant" here means "a small part or portion." Out of the vast multitude of Israelites, only a few will be saved.
The most blessed remnant mentioned in the Bible is that of the true Church, which refers to believers in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Jesus Himself taught that this remnant would be small compared to the overall population throughout history. He said that many will find the way to destruction, but only a few will find the way to eternal life. As believers, we can find peace in knowing that we belong to this remnant.
