One word, metamelomai, denotes regret or remorse for wrongs done without necessarily leading to a change of heart and action. Another word, metanoeo, refers to true biblical repentance characterized by awareness of guilt and sinfulness, apprehending God's mercy in Jesus Christ, changing one's attitude and actions regarding sin, and pursuing holy living.
The focus of Jesus' mission was to call sinners to repentance. He emphasized the need for a complete change of heart and mind, warning that without repentance, all would perish. He commanded His disciples to take His message of repentance and faith to all nations. Repentance in the Bible involves recognizing that our sin is offensive to God and making an about-face, turning away from self towards God. It sets us on a new path ruled by God's commands.
