A riot is a violent and disruptive disturbance of the peace caused by a crowd. Riots often lead to property damage and injuries. They can be fueled by various factors, including race, religion, or other social issues. While riots may seem like spontaneous outbursts of unified outrage, they are often instigated by individuals with their own agenda, manipulating the passions of the crowd.
In the Bible, there are several instances of riots, but none of them are portrayed favorably. The apostle Paul was a victim of rioters on multiple occasions (2 Corinthians 6:5; Acts 17:5; 19:23–41). These riots were driven by jealousy and deception. In many cases, the townspeople who participated in the riots were not even fully aware of the issues at stake. Rioters may engage in destructive behavior, harm innocent bystanders, obstruct law enforcement personnel, and cause significant disruption to society. Anger, especially when driven by vengeance or fueled by self-seeking instigators, is not a trustworthy guide. The Bible cautions against allowing anger to control our actions (James 1:20). Those who succumb to anger may become foolish participants in ungodly riots.
