In today's world, safety and security are paramount concerns for many people. We face threats to our physical safety every day, whether it be from crime, natural disasters, or other dangers. Additionally, spiritual safety is a universal need, as we seek to find peace and security in our eternal destiny. The Bible offers guidance and wisdom on both physical and spiritual safety, providing us with a source of hope and assurance in an uncertain world.
The Old Testament Perspective
The Old Testament emphasizes the importance of obedience to God's commandments as a means of ensuring safety. God promised the Israelites that if they obeyed His laws, they would dwell in the land in safety (Leviticus 25:18–19; 26:3–5; Deuteronomy 12:10). Conversely, when the Israelites turned away from God and followed other gods, their safety was threatened, leading to disaster. The book of Judges vividly illustrates this link between national safety and obedience to God's Word.
Proverbs 18:10 describes the name of the Lord as a strong tower, a place of refuge where the righteous can find safety. This verse reminds us that our ultimate safety lies in trusting in the Lord. Proverbs 29:25 further emphasizes the importance of trusting in God for safety, stating that those who trust in the Lord will be safe.
The New Testament Perspective
While the New Testament does not neglect physical safety, it places greater emphasis on spiritual safety or salvation. Jesus and the New Testament writers spoke extensively about being saved and finding eternal security. Spiritual safety can only be found through faith in the shed blood of Christ for the forgiveness of our sins and in His resurrection (John 3:17; Acts 2:21; 4:12; Romans 10:9; Ephesians 2:8). Jesus came into the world to provide spiritual safety and eternal security for all who believe in Him.
It is important to recognize that the need for physical safety pales in comparison to the universal need for spiritual safety. Even if we face great dangers and threats to our physical well-being in this world, we can still have the assurance of eternal security in heaven. Jesus reminds us not to fear those who can harm our bodies but cannot touch our souls (Matthew 10:28).
The Temporary Nature of Worldly Safety
Many people are deceived into thinking that true security is found in worldly things such as money, comfort, position, or power. However, these things only provide temporary and fleeting safety. The book of Proverbs warns us that riches can sprout wings and fly away, emphasizing the uncertainty of worldly wealth (Proverbs 23:5). Ecclesiastes 9:11 further emphasizes that nothing in this world is certain, as time and chance affect everyone regardless of their wealth or abilities.
No worldly foundation can provide us with the spiritual security needed for eternal life. The apostle Paul speaks of a future day when the Lord will return to earth. At that time, those who have put their trust in anything other than Christ will find that they have no peace or safety (1 Thessalonians 5:2–3). True wisdom lies in fearing the Lord, the only one who can provide genuine security (Proverbs 3:23–26).
Why This Matters
Safety is a fundamental human need, and it is natural for us to seek security in various ways. However, the Bible reminds us that true safety can only be found in God. While physical safety is important, it is temporary and does not guarantee eternal well-being. Spiritual safety, on the other hand, offers us lasting security and peace.
Understanding the biblical perspective on safety helps us prioritize our focus on eternal matters rather than becoming consumed by worldly concerns. It encourages us to place our trust in God and seek Him as our ultimate source of safety and security. By doing so, we can find peace in the midst of life's uncertainties and have the assurance of eternal life in Christ.
